Hey all! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving and a nice, productive and safe Black Friday!
Now, I know what you are expecting; I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving because of the bloody history that precedes it. Well actually, no.
My family has attempted to celebrate thanksgiving a few times in the past. In fact, I think a total of four times, and on two of those occasions, we had chicken.
The thing is, we just don’t like it. We also don’t have a need for it. Every Friday since I was in elementary school, we have had our own, super mini and toned down, Thanksgiving. Friday nights we make something special that is out of the ordinary for my family, and we try to all sit down together as a family and enjoy each other’s company.
Also, as many people I know, I was not taught to give thanks once a year. In fact, I don’t think any of us were. Before I begin eating anything at all, I say a small prayer that thanks God for the blessing of food before me. Even when it’s an apple. So we don’t really do a Thanksgiving because we find ourselves having a Thanksgiving every Friday, and a thanks giving every day.
I do wish at times that we celebrated, because I love the idea of it. But all my family lives pretty far away and it would be much more effort to fly to a different country than it is worth.
I still enjoy talking about people’s Thanksgiving plans, and have often times discussed Thanksgiving menus with my friends and coworkers. I am not a fan of turkey (maybe it’s been too dry and plain whenever I had it, I’m not sure), and I can’t have pecan pie. But green bean casserole sounds good, and I LOVED mashed potatoes.
So, as of now, I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. But, maybe one day I will.
You’re all invited to come that day. Just know I will probably burn the turkey, so bring a backup.
Happy Holidays! Keep your blessings in mind!
