Ah denim, the life-long staple of America. We sure have come a long way from our Levi’s wrangler days of construction attire and Britney’s all-denim ensemble. And yet the inspiration for innovation and creativity with denim doesn’t die, long live denim. On a sunny day (I know quite a surprise after the past weeks), I saw the trend particularly vibrant.
The denim jacket. An underrated but hugely crucial closet staple for men and women alike. While it resurges year after year it seems it has regained some lost traction from times before of bomber jackets, cardigans, and fuzzy bear jackets. Fashion has remembered just how a denim jacket can pull together an outfit and make a statement. From the perfect walk in the park shield from the breeze to the edgy piece for a drink or rock show (cue in all CBGB feels). Today, with myself included, I must have seen about 1 in every 3 people wearing a denim jacket. And with all that abundance of denim just on the top halves of those whom I crossed paths with there was still a sense of individuality. From the wash, cut, length, pins, patches, and more each one was unique.
What is it about the darn jacket that just makes us want to pick it from our closets and show it off? It’s that cool kid feel, personified by previous it icons like James Dean, John Lennon, Madonna, SJP, and Rihanna amongst many others. You’d be lying if you said wearing your jean jacket doesn’t give you some boost of confidence and desire to put on those shades and own the world. But this staple doesn’t have to fill such a big shoe, it is also the easiest and effortless addition when heading out in a rush, the point is, it gets the job done. Of course, please don’t choose it as a staple in your “please hire me, I’m a broke college kid, graduating with massive debt” wardrobe; just a handy suggestion.
