On November 24th, the complete list of nominees for the 2021 Grammys were released to the public.
Artists experience a wave of emotions as they discover if they received noms, and fans are quick to express their sentiments on social media. Airing Sunday, January31st on CBS, here are some thoughts on those who are nominated, and those who were snubbed.
- Dua Lipa, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Roddy Ricch domination!
-
This year, Beyonce leads the Grammy with nine nominations including record and song of the year for “Black Parade.” Taylor Swift got six nominations for her album folklore and “Beautiful Ghosts,” a song she has written for Cats (2019), a movie I wish we could erase from existence (P.S. if you watched the heartbreaking Miss Americana documentary on Netflix, then you know why Swifties are so proud of her). Dua Lipa and Roddy Ricch each also got six nominations—Lipa for her dance-pop album Future Nostalgia, and Ricch for his single “The Box” and collaboration with DaBaby in “Rockstar.”
- The Weeknd doesn’t receive any noms
-
Despite having one of the biggest hits of the year (“Blinding Lights”), The Weeknd received no noms from the Grammys. His album, After Hours, debuted number one on the Billboard charts, making it his fourth number one album. Even though it received great reviews, it appears that the Academy has disregarded these achievements.
- Megan Thee Stallion is seen and heard
-
Megan Thee Stallion has had the most eventful year. Following the shooting she endured in July, speaking out for Black women and men in her SNL performance, and releasing her debut studio album Goods News, nothing can stop her now. Megan, a force to be reckoned with, got four nominations for her hit single “Savage,” which features Beyonce, and is up for Best New Artist.
- Harry Styles FINALLY receives Grammy nominations
-
When Harry Styles’ debut album didn’t receive any Grammy noms, I was so livid! There were so many songs that were worthy of recognition from the Academy. Luckily, this time around, the Grammy gods heard our prayers and gave him not only one, but THREE nominations for his second album Fine Line. Even though he should’ve been nominated for AOTY (or any major category really), we’re extremely proud of this achievement and hope that he continues to receive the well deserved recognition from the Academy in the future.
- Grammy shows no love for Blackpink
-
In a weird turn of events, Blackpink did not receive any Grammy nominations this year. This comes at a shock since they have amassed a large following in the U.S. They even performed at Coachella last year, a historic moment for K-pop since they were the first K-pop girl group to perform at the music festival. If anything, they could have at least been nominated for Best New Artist.
- We stan Phoebe Bridgers and Chloe x Halle in this household
-
What a year it has been for our alt-rock and R&B women! Phoebe Bridgers got four nominations including Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album for her masterpiece Punisher (it is a must-hear! I can’t recommend this album enough). Meanwhile, Chloe x Halle got three nominations for their gem Ungodly Hour (their single “Do It” is also nominated and is a major bop). I am hoping they all get a chance to perform because their voices are angelic. You will be transported to heaven once you hear them sing.
Fun fact (actually, an AMAZING fact): All nominees for Best Rock Performance are women! We love to see it!
- BTS is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance…that’s it?
-
BTS is currently one of the most popular boy bands in the world! So, it comes as a shock that they only received one nomination from the Grammys. Many fans and critics are left wondering why this happened since they’ve constantly been on the Billboard charts, broken streaming records, and have received praise for their message of self-love and hope. It’s great that they got a nom, but they have the potential to be included in the bigger categories like AOTY!
At the end of the day, is it really the Grammys if there’s no controversy? With the pandemic going on, it doesn’t feel like there were a lot of music releases this year. The Grammy nomination list is a weird reflection of the music listened to today as not every record-breaking, popular, or innovative masterpieces were included (also, Gaga only receiving two noms for Chromatica? Yeah, somethings not right here). The only thing we can look forward to are the Grammy performances and live-tweeting on the wins and losses of our favs.
