The Back To School Mixer by Her Campus Rutgers was a success held on September 26, 2018, and I want to thank each and every one of you who came out in support of us for making this event as fantastic as it was. We had a successful turnout with over eighty girls participating in our events, tweeting us online, and coming to our general meetings the following week.
For the girls who were not able to make it, here is a quick recap of the events. We started our Mixer with a quick intro of what our organization represents and then transitioned into our first game which was Her Campus Bingo. We also had panelists and guest speakers talk about their inspiring life stories and what lead to their success.
Throughout the event, we called out names for raffle winners and also had our Selfie Social for girls to connect and find friends around campus with similar interests. We ended the social with giving out Her Campus Giveaway bags for the first 50 girls to participate in all of our events!
We thoughtfully had sponsors send us items for these bags in order to help girls focus on school and enjoy the right amount of work-life balance in terms of Mind, Body, and the Soul. Here’s what to take away from our event and how to use your Her Campus bags for a successful semester ahead!
Mind
These days it’s rare that we get a moment to ourselves, especially with the start of the new semester. From work and family to socialize, there’s rarely time for a pamper session, which is why most women see a trip to the beauty salon or hairdressers as a real treat. However, not all of us have the time or money to visit the salon every week, but the thing you should allocate time to from your week is painting your nails.
Did you know that there’s a current study being done by Greta Angert, a psychotherapist specializing in career and life transitions, about how painting your nails can help to alleviate stress, boost your mood, and give you confidence? According to her study, sitting down to paint your nails is a simple gesture that tells you “I’m worth it,” “I deserve this.”
Women tend to notice small details and talk with their hands. Seeing a pretty color can brighten their mood and colors have a strong effect on the mind. You might just score a compliment about your manicure and there’s nothing wrong with a little ego boost during your day.
Today, however, we figured the colors you need are red and black. Red is a bold, attention-getting color, and helps you project an image of power, action, and confidence and the perfect color to show passion on a night out or on a special date. Black expresses a powerful state of mind which might be the reason why black is one of the most popular colors. People often describe the color as sexy, powerful, mysterious, and even professional.
Not only will it boost your ego and your mood, painting your nails gives you instant gratification, something we all need when waiting for our hard work to come to fruition. So next time you’re stressed to the max, grab your bottle of Color Club Nail Polish and start painting!
Body
As crucial and significant fitness is for us, as students we tend to fall through with our plans because of our crazy busy schedules. To help students, we decided to reach out to Kind Bars for samples of one of their delicious and nutritious gluten and GMO-free bars. However, we can do a couple of simple tricks and hacks to stay fit and healthy throughout our semesters.
Our First Tip Is To Take The Stairs!
Every Rutgers student knows we have no shortage of stairs here on campus. Sometimes, we opt to take the elevator in the Academic Buildings to the fourth floor to reduce the hike. Don’t do it. I know, it’s hard, the temptation is real, but just take the stairs. Your body will thank you.
Opt For Baked Or Roasted Foods Instead Of Fried
This time of year is filled with French fries, chicken nuggets, pizza, burgers, and other breaded and fried food of the like. Instead of eating French fries, there are usually roasted or baked potatoes. You’ll still get your starch fill, but you’ll avoid the excessive amounts of saturated fat from the frying oil.
Avoid Sugary Coffee Drinks
Instead of getting a vanilla or caramel latte, opt for a regular coffee or plain skim latte. Not only will you reduce your sugar intake, but you’ll also avoid the artificial flavors hiding in the syrups used to make those drinks. Try adding some cinnamon instead for flavor.
Avoid Foods High In Sodium
Fast food, I’m looking at you. Sodium not only makes you bloated in the short term, but having too much, which most people are guilty of, leads to the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. You can read more about the negative effects of sodium from our friends down the road at Harvard.
Drink More Water
Your body needs hydration, and most people don’t get enough. Take advantage of all the water fill stations around campus and carry around a reusable bottle to fill and drink from throughout the day. To help with hydration, we served Her Campus Rutgers water bottles at the serving table.
Sleep, Sleep, Sleep, and Sleep Some More
I know getting in eight hours a night isn’t always possible, but give it your best shot. If you finish your homework early enough to get eight hours of sleep, don’t binge watch Netflix. Just turn off the light and go to bed.
Actually Go to the Gym…If You Can
Try to go to the gym at least three times a week. Fitness allows your body to stay in shape and feel better overall. Our recommendation – work out in the mornings as they will keep you energized all day. Being fitness conscious improves concentration, eases anxiety, brings oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and helps with conditions related to the lungs, heart, breasts, immune system, and blood pressure.
Soul
With busy schedules, stressed daily routines, and adulting, we do not have any time to waste doing other things. As students, we have a small window to make the right decisions versus the easy decisions. To de-stress and help you enjoy your work-life balance, we have added one of these hilarious books in your goodie bag!
Rohit Bhargava’s humorous take on “killing it at work and in real life” will let you in on key secrets to things you should look forward to apart from the workload and stress you have right now. As you start growing and learning how adult life truly is, you realize that there is more than what we initially think and a lot more to what our adult figures actually do.
Rohit Bhargava is an innovation and marketing expert, a skilled facilitator, keynote speaker, and the founder of Non-Obvious company. After a successful 15 year career as a brand and marketing strategist at two of the largest agencies in the world (Ogilvy and Leo Burnett), Bhargava became an entrepreneur and has since started three companies. He is the Wall Street Journal best-selling author of five books on topics as wide-ranging as the future of business and building a brand with personality and has delivered sold-out keynote presentations and workshops to business leaders in 32 countries.
His book, “Always Eat Left-Handed,” is filled with tips that reaffirm your belief in yourself and inspire you to bring your best foot forward. Bhargava backs up all his tips with real-life examples and how these tips helped him in the real world. This book is fun, creative, and a non-cliche self-help book that will pull you out of your mid-semester slump and get you back on your toes, ready to face more!
If you liked the products in your goodie bag and would like to learn more about them, you can start by coming out to our general meetings on Thursday nights. This was just one of our successful events this semester and we have a lot more planned for the upcoming weeks! Make sure to follow us on social media and tweet us when you use the items in your goodie bags!
