Now some of you might have heard about the story of a former Rutgers cornerback named Jevon Tyree who claims he was bullied by Rutgers defensive coach David Cohen. Jevon Tyree’s family claims that David Cohen verbally abused their son and even threatened to headbutt Tyree during a spring study hall session and even called him a “p—y.” Tyree quit the team last week according to sources. His parents asked Rutgers to fulfill his scholarship until May and release him so he can transfer to other schools with a football team.
These claims of abuse allegedly happened less than a year after former men’s basketball coach Mike Rice was fired for physically and verbally abusing players. Since then, Rutgers has been out of the spotlight until now. Stories about the alleged abusive treatment of Tyree have been circulating from NJ.com to ESPN.com. This is the type of story that every high caliber university tries to avoid and hopes they do not receive since this promotes bad press not just for the university, but also for the football program joining the Big 10 next year.
Some football players have already begun to defend coach Cohen by saying, “I know what kind of coach he is. I’ve never seen him in a sense of bullying a player. It comes from a passion for the game and trying to get the best out of people” (NJ.com). My questions to Rutgers Students are do you guys think Coach Cohen bullied Jevon Tyree or is Tyree lying? Do you think football players would tell the truth if Coach Cohen did abuse Tyree?
Coach Cohen could have been verbally abusive without even realizing it. Sports, such as football and hockey, are contact sports and athletes are taught to be aggressive at a young age, but aggressiveness can get out of hand. Obviously, these claims are “he said, she said” and no one is really going to know the 100% truth, which could be a problem if this story gets dragged out any longer.
