This summer was a season of reading for me. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, but one of the biggest challenges I face with reading is deciding what book to read. So I am going to break down the most binge-worthy books I have read this summer that are worth the read.Â
The Nightingale by Kristin HannahÂ
If there is one book that I recommend every young woman to read it is this. This historical fiction novel tells the story of two sisters, Isabelle and Vianne, living in a Germany controlled France during World War II. It follows the two sisters and how each had to survive in their own way during the war. This book explores themes such as family loyalty, the will to survive, and most importantly the unbreakable bond between sisters. I never wanted to put this book down and it has you hooked with every page.Â
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
This historical fiction novel follows the marvelous Hollywood legend Evelyn Hugo. Nearing the end of her life, Evelyn hires disclosed reporter Monique Grant to give a final interview about her scandalous and luxurious life. Monique is also dealing with her own personal struggles; her husband has left her and her career is at a stopping point. Why did Evelyn choose her to do this interview? Monique does not know but is determined to make the most of this opportunity. Monique listens to Evelyn as she tells the story of her life; from the start of her career and her first husband in the 1950’s, to her last movie and her final husband in the 1980’s. This book follows themes such as ambition, the struggle of being a woman in Hollywood, sexuality, and a tragic story of a forbidden love. The big question to be answered in this book is after seven marriages, who was the true love of Evelyn’s life?Â
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
The first five pages of this book will have you hooked immediately: A school trivia night gone wrong leads to a murder within a small town community. Throughout the novel, testimonies by the parents in the school are given at the end of each chapter which truly makes you wonder, who did it? This thriller follows the lives of three mothers; Madeline, Jane, and Celeste as they juggle their own personal lives with motherhood. This book has mystery, scandal, and discusses the lesson of how you truly never know what someone is going through behind closed doors. (Also, Big Little Lies is a series on HBO Max which is definitely worth watching.)
