If you’re a senior, I’m sure you’ve been starting to feel the stress of post-graduation starting to set in. It’s those thoughts like, “what am I gonna do now?”, “when will I find a job?”, and “How can I stay happy?” that really makes it hard to think about the future, especially when it’s coming so soon.
I’m here to tell you that it’s going to be okay.
While I don’t have anything figured out myself, I’m learning the importance of mindfulness and patience, knowing that what’s meant for me will find me, or I will find it.
We’re so young, and the world expects so much of us. It’s okay to fight back from those unrealistic expectations and live a life that, first and foremost, feels good for you. From talking with so many of my elders, I’ve learned that their biggest regrets in life were not doing what they really wanted to do while they had the means to do it – it’s the realization that life is short, and we deserve to be happy.
If your job makes you miserable – you don’t have to do it.
If that one person makes you feel bad – you don’t have keep that relationship.
If you don’t like where your feet are currently planted, move them.
In the movie Dead Poets Society, Robin Williams said, “You know, as we come to the end of this phase of our life, we find ourselves trying to remember the good times and trying to forget the bad times. And we find ourselves thinking about the future. We start to worry, thinking, “What am I gonna do? Where am I gonna be in ten years?” But I say to you, “Hey, look at me!” Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day… make a wish and think of me. And make your life spectacular. I know I did.”
This quote always brings tears to my eyes because it’s simple and it’s true. We don’t have very long on this earth. Nothing matters, but everything does. Happiness matters.
If you take anything away from this piece, please take away that this one life is yours, and you can start over whenever you want. People would like us to believe that we don’t have control, but we do, and we always have.
Like Robin did, make your life spectacular.
You got this.
