Why You Should Binge “Emily in Paris” Next on Netflix

Since the craziness of 2020 has commenced, everything from coronavirus, unemployment, civic unrest, and so on, my spirits have been seriously down. And watching “Emily in Paris” gave me an escape that I desperately needed. I was studying abroad in Italy during the Spring 2020 semester and had to come back to the U.S. the first weekend of March. Having my wanderlust severely suppressed and not being able to experience study abroad to its fullest, left me craving for another experience abroad. And watching “Emily in Paris” let me live vicariously through Lily Collins’s character. Not only was the show light hearted, and sweetly innocent, which to be honest was something that I needed in a time of isolation and quarantine. It was also the perfect fix to spark my love of traveling again.  

1. The show gives us hope that it will be safe to travel again 

Watching “Emily in Paris” encouraged me that it will once again be safe to travel again, once the fear of Covid-19 subsides. I did have a certain sense of warped reality watching all of the characters interact without masks. But this show gave me hope that things will eventually go back to normal.   

2. Female empowering 

I appreciate that this plotline follows a young working female and her quest towards a more fulfilling and enriching career. Although she had to balance her love life, and social life, she never let her personal life get in the way of her career.  

3. Promotes collaborating with your co-workers 

I feel as though there is a good lesson to be learned from this show, for anyone that wants to work in a dynamic field, such as international relations or even at a large company with many employees. You can’t be too strict on “how things are done where you’re from”. It will benefit the relationships with your co-workers if you can be open minded and accommodating to others traditions, workplace etiquette, and ways of working together.   

4. Emily experiences and respects different cultures 

While Emily is abroad she tries her hardest to learn French culture and experience it for herself. She tours museums and wineries, eats local cuisine, tries to learn the language, supports local businesses and attractions, and does everything she can to show respect to her co-workers and french friends and neighbors.  

5. The fashion is amazing  

The fashion in this show is just to die for! While some of Emily’s outfits are not my taste, her distinctly french look is definitely on my palette. Everything from bright colored wool coats, tulle dresses, and berets captivated me right from the start of the first episode.  

6. It’s inspiring 

After watching “Emily in Paris” I was absolutely inspired to book my next trip to Paris, France. Aside from traveling already being one of my passions, this show only further convinced me to start saving money for a trip, create french mood boards, shop french brands, and make my own “pain au chocolat” at home.  

7. Emily chooses herself over her boyfriend back home 

Last but not least, Emily makes the ultimate power move when she dumps her lame boyfriend when he refuses to come visit her abroad. Breaking up is not always the best option, but in this case her boyfriend was not being supportive and he was acting immature and selfish. Therefore it made my inner feminist celebrate with a “yaas queen” when Emily broke up with him, whilst she rocked the most killer parisian outfit.
