1. Independence:
While abroad I’ve realized the reality that someday I really will have to be on my own. I’ve now had a taste of what its like to have to take care of myself and not being able to ask my mom and dad how to fix every little thing that goes wrong. Along with this, I have learned that money does NOT grow on trees and that sometimes I might have to stay in and make my own meals.

2. How to have an open mind:
Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you want to have as few regrets as possible. That being said, it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and try new things, those will be some of the most memorable moments of your study abroad experience. Things may not always go as planned, but with an open mind and patience things may turn out even better than we hoped. Â

3. Do not assume:
People are different. No one truly knows everything about a person, so really think before assuming. Being abroad has taught me that everyone has a different background. Even if we speak the same language or are from the same culture, there are still have differences between us. Assuming will get us nowhere.

4. Appreciate every moment:
People often say live in the moment, put your phone down and don’t worry about taking pictures. I am all about taking pictures, so I am not going to tell you to not catch a picture of the Eiffel Tower for all your snapchat friends to see, or to not take that boomerang of you and your friends toasting your glasses at the pub. However, I am going to suggest that instead of spending your time with your friends texting or checking instagram, take in the beauty of the Eiffel Tower and cherish the time you have sitting at the pub with you friends. It is not that hard to put your phone in your purse once you are done snapping those beautiful photos. Live not only for the days you’re traveling to a new country, but the Wednesday nights you go out for a last minute ice cream run with your friends.
