HC: What activities are you involved in on campus?
AL: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., NAACP, WINK (Women Inspiring Never-ending Kinnections)
HC: What is your favorite part about being a leader on campus?
AL: My favorite part about being a campus leader is the impact that I am able to make on students and also the opportunity to make connections with students. Whether I am leading a group discussion or a campus forum, it’s always interesting to hear back from students how what I might have said impacted them in some way. I’ve even had instances where students said that I have helped them realize that they can be who they want to be by simply believing in them when others did not.
I also have a large number of connections from being a campus leader. These connections range from general students on campus, professors, Deans of various schools and influential community members. If I learn that a student may need help networking, I try my hardest to connect them with someone I know in order for them to be successful.
HC: What is your favorite thing about Salisbury?
AL: The small and close knit community that Salisbury has. At first, I wasn’t a fan of how small the campus was and how everyone knew each other. As time went on, I saw that it was actually a major bonus. It’s pretty cool that you can walk across campus and know a large number of students and faculty that you interact with. This is not to say that I see the same people on a daily basis; but, if I do run into someone new, they’re bound to know a mutual friend. This helps with networking!
HC: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
AL: In five years, I can see myself enrolled in a doctoral program. Hopefully I would be in a different state than Maryland. Although I could see myself in my doctoral classes, I would also like to have some sort of job in the Community/Public Health field, specifically with minority population. I would love to be in some sort of long-term relationship by then because I would be 26, but we’ll see what God has in store! Hopefully, whatever I’ll be doing in the next five years will make a positive impact on the world.
HC: What is your dream job and how do you think you’ll get there?
AL: I’m unsure if there is a proper term for what my dream job would be, but it would entail traveling the world and helping countries receive health care. I would do this by working with the community to see what health problems they face and how we can address those problems while meeting their culture’s needs, etc. I would imagine I would get to this job by having a vast background in different cultures and all things health related. A background in planning and implantation would be helpful too. If I did not create  my own company, I would partner or work for a nonprofit to make this dream a reality.
HC: What is your favorite thing about Commons?
AL: Since the drastic changes in Commons have taken place, I’m not really fond of it. I don’t really have a particular food station that I love, but I do like the open atmosphere it creates. It brings students from all backgrounds, races and ethnicities together to break bread. Commons is a place where I can see my friends who I may not see so often and we can laugh and share stories from our weekly struggles. In a way, I guess you could say I love the sense of community it creates.
HC: Who is your favorite Neo soul artist?
AL: Erykah Badu
HC: Favorite Author?
AL: I don’t read that much, but I’m a fan of Toni Morrison.
HC: Favorite Poet?
AL: Maya Angelou
HC: Do you have any advice for the freshmen class?
AL: Stay true to who are and remember why you’re here.
HC: What motto or quote do you live by?
AL: Nothing worth having comes easy.
