For over a month, I have begun each morning by writing three pages of stream of consciousness journaling. I do these pages free hand and write down whatever comes to mind. Sometimes I write about a dream I had, a problem I am dealing with, or even just how much I do not want to be writing morning pages.
When one begins morning pages, they find a lot of senseless chatter in their mind and getting it down on the pages is a way of releasing it and creating space for new ideas. At first, your pages may feel irrelevant but the cool thing is that over time you may find new ideas, or even a song/poem/book etc., popping up seemingly out of nowhere.
The more you do morning pages, the more they do for you. I have noticed in the last 30 days that I am far more creative than I was prior to writing them. My inner artist is starting to become increasingly vocal about her desires, and it feels liberating.
I found out about morning pages from Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way, and can honestly say that even in the short time I’ve been writing them, I can already see them transforming my life for the better.
I find myself actually craving the morning pages, when before, I used to see them as a chore. I didn’t know what to write about, my hand would get all crampy, and I thought what I was writing about was pointless. The thing is that even when, especially when, what you write in morning pages is pointless, the more you need them. Getting those pointless thoughts out of your brain and onto paper is like letting fresh clean air into the mind.
