5 Ways to Beat Test Anxiety as Told by Parks and Recreation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Francisco chapter.

It’s officially midterm season here at SFSU. With midterms comes long hours in the library, endless stacks of flashcards, and depleted bank accounts from the excessive amounts of coffee purchased. But for some of us midterm season also brings along test anxiety. If you suffer from test anxiety, midterms can be an unbearable nightmare of stress and uncertainty.

Test anxiety sucks. But with a few simple tips (as told by your favorite Pawnee Parks and Recreation employees) you can learn to manage your anxiety and go from this…

To this…

Tip #1: Give yourself enough time to study. This is easier said than done, but even starting to study for your test two days before rather than the night before will make a world of difference when you walk into that classroom. One way to help you stay on top of your studying is to create a study schedule and make sure all your exam dates are written down in a planner or your calendar app. Be so organized even Leslie Knope is jealous.

Tip #2: Go into the exam with a positive attitude. Even if you’re not sure that you completely grasp everything you studied, you should still remain optimistic that you’ll do well. Keep an open mind and not instantly count yourself out before the test even starts. Confidence is key.

Tip #3: Eat something nutritious before the test. No, that latte from Peet’s doesn’t count. The butterflies in your stomach might keep you from eating, but you will appreciate eating a snack once you’re in the exam. Known brain foods like blueberries, avocados and whole grain toast are great choices.

Tip #4: Take a deep breath and relax. When our bodies get anxious, there is a tendency to tense up and clench our muscles. This prevents us from being able to think clearly and focus our minds. Before the test starts, take a couple deep breaths and stretch your neck out.

Tip #5: Treat yo self. When you finally get out of that test, don’t forget to celebrate how awesome you are. No matter what the results may be, you deserve to treat yourself. Plan to go  to Chipotle with friends afterwards or splurge on that lipstick you were eyeing at Sephora. Make Tom and Donna proud!
