National Breast Cancer Awareness month begins this month. The annual health campaign takes place throughout the month of October by various charities and breast cancer organizations, such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. The group was founded to increase awareness of the disease, and support the cause by raising funds for clinical research and treatment. Groups that participate in the campaign seek to spread knowledge of breast cancer by informing and supporting those who have been affected.
Self-care is important, and health should always be a priority, especially for women. No matter at what age, it is never too late to take precautions or treat your health.
According to the data reported by the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 (12%) women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. Women with a personal history of breast cancer, a family history of breast cancer, and women who have been exposed to radiation therapy before age 30 are at an even higher risk for developing breast cancer.
Women are encouraged to be tested for early determination, even if there are no symptoms. The early detection can be found through a series of screenings, including monthly breast self-exams, regular clinical exams and mammograms.
The health center at San Francisco State is a great resource that offers students access to health services. The women’s health medical evaluations, exams and treatments are available to all registered female students. Through this examination, women receive an annual checkup that includes a breast exam provided by SHS Physicians (MD), Nurse Practitioners (NP), Registered Nurses (RN) and Clinical or Medical Assistants.
