Over the past few years, we have witnessed Demi Lovato go through some life struggles.
Demi battled bulimia, addiction, and low self esteem. She sought help and managed to gracefully rise from the ashes by accepting her problems, but more importantly herself. You go Demi!
Now, she has become an anti-body shaming advocate, expressing an “I don’t have time for that” attitude towards society’s ridiculous standards of beauty. However, she is not just telling body shamers to get lost, she is also encouraging women of all shapes, colors, and ages to “Rock what yo’ mama gave ya!”
Demi is not only a total bad a**, she is also an inspiration to all college women across the country. Thanks to her IDGAF attitude towards body shamers (or should I say haters?), we can empower ourselves to adopt the same mentality.  Our self-esteem is constantly tested throughout our college career. After all, we are attending college with the hopes of trying to figure out what the heck we are going to do with our lives, while maintaining good grades, working, and socializing. Let’s just say it can get a little hectic! Sadly, at times, we start to question our abilities and self-worth. We might think, “I should have studied harder for that exam – I am such an idiot”, or “Omg….does Sarah like me?”

So when you are feeling down and unsure of yourself just think, “What would Demi do to empower herself?” Not sure? That’s okay, because I am going to tell you.Â
Â
If someone shames you, use humor to bite them back!
During our college years (and throughout our lives), we are bound to stumble across someone who has nothing better to do than vocalize their negative opinions about you and everyone around them. Whether it is a teacher, peer, or family member, just remember people who put you down are terrible and disgusting people. If someone says you are, “too thin”, “too fat”, or “stupid”, they are clearly insecure with themselves and should go see a therapist or something. Life is too short to care about haters. You are fabulous and beautiful just the way you are! If you feel the need to respond, use humor — That’s what Demi did to someone who fat shamed her on her Twitter. Â

Feeling good about yourself? Take a selfie, or five. Whatever!
That’s right – I said it…take a selfie! If you passed a really hard final, feel a little sexy, or got a fresh mani pedi, we must be feeling good, right? So, take a selfie or 500 selfies – who cares! You look your best when you feel your best. Now, listen I am not saying to be an all out narcissist with one thousand photos of you making a duck face. I am simply saying it is okay to take a selfie, especially when you feel like a model fresh off the runway! It will give you a confidence boost. Think of it like an afternoon pick me up, but instead of injecting your body with caffeine, you are injecting it with the fabulousness that is you! Demi proudly displays her selfies on Instagram. Thanks for the inspo Dems!
Practice self-love.
We all have those days when we feel really down on ourselves. Like those days when we feel like a giant walrus, laying on a beach and bathing in our own ugliness. Just remember that these momentary feelings quickly pass. You do not have to get straight A’s to be smart, or contour your face to be beautiful. You are who you are and that is okay. Think of a positive attribute about yourself or a quote that makes you feel good and say it to yourself throughout the day. That’s what Demi does! According to Us Weekly magazine, before her sexy VMA performance, Demi’s microphone caught her telling herself, “Listen, I am enough. I am enough…”.  Let’s be real, she is enough and so are you!
Â
Can we just say, thank you Demi Lovato! You inspire us to constantly empower ourselves with self-love and confidence. We love it, love you, and hope you continue to kick a**!
HCXO,
Nicole
