A’ja Wilson is a two-time WNBA champion as she won her second championship just last Wednesday. A’ja is only 27 years old and was drafted first overall in 2018 by the Las Vegas Aces. She previously played for the South Carolina Gamecocks where she helped the Gamecocks win their first NCAA women’s basketball championship in 2017. Despite her number of championships, A’ja has made a huge name for herself by continuously raising the bar for other WNBA players. Let’s take a look at some of her other athletic accomplishments.
A’ja was announced the 2023 WNBA finals MVP right after her championship win last Wednesday. Earning a finals MVP places A’ja as the best player out of the two teams competing in the championship. Wilson also took the title of two regular season MVPs in 2020 and 2022. This made her the best player in the entire league in both those years. Only three players in WNBA history have won three MVP awards: Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, and Sheryl Swoopes. A’ja is currently on track to break the record of most earned MVPs in WNBA history, as her career is just getting started.
Wilson is also an Olympic gold medalist who won her gold during the 2020 Summer Olympics. Wilson played for Team USA and beat Japan 90-75 in the final game. A’ja also has been recognized as an All-Star 5 times throughout her WNBA seasons. Wilson currently sets the record for highest points scored in a WNBA game at 53 points. She continuously raises the bar and sets new records.
A’js Wilson is one of the most dominant athletes of this generation. Her success has been incredible and she continues to surprise fans by getting better and better each season. As she walks away this season with her second championship, I can’t wait to see what she’ll bring to the court next year.
