The 2023 Met Gala just passed on May 1st and the theme was in honor of Karl Lagerfeld, a designer who passed away in 2019. While, of course, the fashion was a mixed bag (and we’ll look at some of the best soon), the theme itself has caused some controversy. Throughout his life, Lagerfeld made comments against sexual assault survivors, fat people, and more. An article by The Cut goes into more detail about these comments and can be read here.Â
As for the fashion, as usual there were bad outfits, great outfits, and outrageous outfits (Jared Leto’s cat costume), but here are some of my favorites from the 2023 Met Gala:
Anne Hathaway in Atelier Versace
Anne Hathaway is now a Versace ambassador, so her dress was meant to connect Versace and Chanel. The dress was made of tweed, a staple for Lagerfeld, while the gold pins honored the Versace safety pin gown. This dress not only looks incredible on Hathaway, but perfectly mixes the best of Versace and Chanel.
Taika Waititi and Rita Ora in Prabal Gurung
Waititi’s outfit was everything we want from men on the Met Gala carpet, exciting, unique, and of course, not just a boring suit. His long gray blazer, white pants, pearl chains, and black corsage all come together to create an incredible look. Ora’s look was a sheer black dress, with an impressively long train. She topped it off with a flower choker and her nails were done with beaded chains attached. The floral details on her dress matched with Waititi’s corsage, making them the perfect pair.Â
Jenna Ortega in Thom Browne
Jenna Ortega’s Thom Browne look featured a black corset with a long train and a sheer blouse with a bowtie. It’s topped off with a black tweed jacket, honoring the theme perfectly.  Â
Brian Tyree Henry in Karl Lagerfeld
Brian Tyree Henry’s black silk vest and pants are elevated by beaded necklaces and a stunning black ruffled cape. He is once again proving that men should be doing more than just a plain suit on the red carpet.Â
Lizzo in Chanel
Lizzo’s look was simple and beautiful, a black gown lined with pearls. It was inspired by a look from the Chanel 1991/92 collection.Â
Dua Lipa in Chanel
Dua Lipa was one of this year’s co-hosts and did not disappoint. She wore a tweed dress from the Chanel fall 1992 couture collection. On top of that, she wore a Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace that is over 100 carats. Dua Lipa’s ensemble made her one of the best dressed of the night.Â
Jessica Chastain in Gucci
Jessica Chastain’s Met Gala look included a black gown, sheer black gloves, stunning jewelry, and black shades to top it all off. The most eye-catching part, however, is her platinum blonde hair. Chastain is almost unrecognizable with her new hair color, but it tops off the look perfectly (and it’s a wig!).Â
That’s another Met Gala completed. Those were some of my favorite looks of the year, although there were plenty more to choose from! Now we’ll have to wait and see how the next Met goes.Â
