Beginning April 4, SF State will be running a three-day rendition of Eve Ensler’s play, “The Vagina Monologues“. The production is made up of several heart-warming, hysterical, or tragic testimonials about women and their stories.
SF State Senior, Alyse Allain, takes on the role of directing the young women who will perform on stage, and speaks with Her Campus San Francisco about her experience.
1. What is “The Vagina Monologues” about?
Allain: “The Vagina Monologues” is a collection of stories based on real interviews that the creator, Eve Ensler, conducted, that have been turned into monologues. Each monologue portrays a different kind of woman in a different situation. Some are funny and lighthearted, and some are dark and thought provoking.
2. Why did you take on “The Vagina Monologues”?
A: I took on this play because I love that it uses the theatre as a means of education, social justice, and healing, while also providing entertainment.
3. What was it like getting ready for the show?
A: Very hectic, but very fun. It’s difficult to manage such a large cast and make sure everyone is involved in the entire performance, not just their own monologue. However, through all the chaos, the cast and crew have definitely become one big happy vagina family.
4. What do you hope to achieve with this show?
A: I hope that the audience will leave the performance educated, and with a new mindset on women’s issues. I also hope that people find it genuinely touching and entertaining. All in all, my aim is definitely for everyone to have a good time.
5. How did you hear about “The Vagina Monologues”?
A: As a director, the play itself is famous in the theatre world, so I had heard about it long before I directed it. But it wasn’t until SF State originally produced it back in 2010 that I finally got around to really understanding it.
6. What is the best part about being involved in a production like this?
A: Getting to know all of the amazing women involved with it, and knowing that by doing this I am educate people and make a difference in the world.
The production will start at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Kunth Hall. Tickets are available for purchase at the box office in the Creative Arts building. To find more information, like ticket pricing, click on Her Campus San Francisco’s events page, or click on the image above.
