If you’re anything like me, you will try anything to make your hair soft, get rid of split ends, or make it grow longer. I have tried using different shampoos and conditioners, remedies I found on Pinterest, and even mixing prenatal pills with my hair products. Just when I thought I had lost all hope, I came across a link on Facebook posted by HelloGiggles about a girl who tried a personalized shampoo designed specifically for her hair.

After reading the article I decided I was going to check it out. The company is called Function of Beauty. According to Function of Beauty, they believe that your shampoo and conditioner should be as unique as you and your hair. With over 12 billion combinations, each set is uniquely formulated for you, with no two products ever being the same. Plus, the products are sulfate, paraben, toxin, and cruelty fee. The products are even made in the U.S.A and shipping is free! In the end, if you’re not satisfied with your set, Function of Beauty will refund your order within the first 30 days.

To start your order you must first build your hair profile. The first set of questions are about your hair type, structure, and scalp moisture. When it comes to hair type you can choose between straight, wavy, curly and even coily for those of you with extra curly curls. Here I decided to go with wavy since my hair seems to lose its curl as it grows longer. Then for structure there is fine, medium and coarse. I went with medium since mine isn’t thin at all, but not necessarily super thick either. Next is scalp moisture where you can choose from dry, normal and oily. I went with normal since I’ve never had too many issues with my scalp.

The next step is to select five different hair goals. You can choose from deep condition, replenish, fix split ends, strengthen, hydrate, lengthen, volumize, color protection, thermal protection, anti-aging, anti-frizz, curl definition, shine, straighten, nourish roots,, sooth scalp and oil control. I personally decided to go with shine, fix split ends, lengthen, anti-frizz, and hydrate. My hair is usually pretty dry and frizzy so I wanted to make it look sleeker and make it even longer than it is.

After that you can move on to customizing your formulas. First you get the chance to choose the colors of both your shampoo and conditioner. You can choose from a bluish grey, pink, orange, mint green, purple, or dye free. Then you get to choose your fragrance. You can either go with cucumber mint, grapefruit hibiscus, sandalwood violet, or essential oils. You can decide if you want your fragrance to be light, medium or strong. Overall, I went with mint green shampoo and the bluish grey conditioner. I decided to make my set have a strong essential oil sent. LASTLY, you get to name your set, which is then printed on the bottle. I decided to name mine Victoria, hence my name, so my set was officially named Function of Victoria.

Next you get to choose your size and frequency. Here there are different size bottles. You can buy each one individually or as a set, even different size bottles. Now yes, the bottles can be a little pricy, but the way I thought of it, is if I were to buy the fancy stuff from the salon I would be spending just as much, so why not get exactly what I want? Here you can also decide if you want to get your set just once, or every 2, 4 or six months. I decided to purchase my set one time, this way I could see how long it lasts and if it truly worked the way I wanted it to.

After this you set up a profile with a username and password, then you move on to typing in your shipping and billing information. Then BAM! You have your very own, personalized shampoo and conditioner being made and sent to you.

After finishing, I received an e-mail confirming my order. It said my order was going to be ready and on its way sometime around the end of December, just in time for Christmas. However, I got an email as it got closer to the estimated ship date that my order wouldn’t be ready until later. I actually received an e-mail from the CEO and Founder of Function of Beauty. I realize it probably wasn’t personal, but it helped a little bit. Basically what had happened was the companies orders increased due to the holidays and they underestimated how much time it was going to take to finish all of the orders.

When I finally got the e-mail that my order shipped I was constantly checking the mail to make sure I didn’t miss the package. FINALLY, it came! It was a small mint green box and the outside actually said “Function of Victoria” on it! As fast as I could, I ripped open the box and there it was! I had two individual bottles of the shampoo and conditioner set as well as two pumps and a small pamphlet that listed my hair profile, hair goals descriptions, and a personal hair regimen.

My hair regimen stated that I was to use my shampoo 4-5 times a week, shampooing it twice every time to make sure my hair is clean. I was to use my conditioner 4-5 times a week as well, only using it once every time, but letting it sit in my hair for 2-3 minutes and rinsing it out with cold water.

I have been using my personalized shampoo and conditioner set for a month now, following each step carefully, and I couldn’t be happier with my results. After only a month of use, my hair has already grown at least an inch (I can tell because I got my hair done before I started using it and my roots are grown out) and my hair is much, much softer. Plus, the essential oil smell is amazing. If you have ever smelled the stress relief lotion from Bath & Body Works, the smell is about the same. It is relaxing and the scent actually sticks in your hair, causing you to catch a whiff every time a breeze goes by.
