A new year brings a new Homecoming, and with that comes new Homecoming royalty. This week’s celebrity is your 2014 SAU Homecoming Queen, Shelby Steger!
This senior from Kewanee, Ill. is a double major in Radio/TV Production and Journalism and has high hopes for her future as her dream job is to be an anchor on the Today Show. This follows suit with her plans for after graduation of moving to a bigger city to find a job in TV. On campus, Shelby is involved in SAU TV, The Buzz, KALA, Dance Marathon and Student Alumni Association. She loves fashion, running, shopping, traveling and being with friends. Shelby says she has two role models: Natalie Morales, who is an anchor on the TODAY show, and her mother, Laurie Steger.
As she prepares to graduate in the spring, Shelby has a bit of advice for underclassmen.
“Enjoy every moment here at SAU because it goes by in the blink of an eye. Get to know your classmates and professors. Get involved in as much as you can even if you think you’re too busy. Make as many friends as possible. Don’t take a day of college life for granted because before you know it you will be a senior. SAU is the best place to be and offers everything you need before entering the real world. Never forget: once a bee, always a bee,” she said.
As for her plans now that she is queen, Shelby wants to keep the small campus atmosphere and encourages everyone to show their school spirit.
“Now that I am queen, I will keep loving all my bees like I did before the crown was placed on my head. GO BEES!!!”
Shelby reacted as most girls feel they would when they were crowned by freezing up and not remembering what actually happened.
“Thank goodness my friends were video taping the whole thing because I do not even remember what I did as I heard my name. I was so surprised that I froze up inside. I felt and still feel so honored that the student body voted me queen. I look at the pictures and my crown and all I can do is smile,” Shelby said.
So what are three things you did not know about your Homecoming queen? She is afraid of the dark, has an obsession with jewelry and just ran her half marathon this summer.
If you see this smiling Bee around campus, be sure to congratulate or say hello to your Homecoming queen!
