Workout Plans for Every Collegiette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

With all the different exercises available to do, sometimes it’s intimidating to start up a workout program.  Whether you’re a pro at working out in need of a change, or are afraid of starting up but want to get moving, there’s something for you.

Now, we love our weekly workouts right here on Her Campus SAU but sometimes you need a little variety and someone motivating you to keep going.  I have an addiction to working out and have tried it all. Here are some of my suggestions:

Free group classes right here on campus: (all located in the ballroom unless noted otherwise)

Trim and Tone-

Monday and Wednesdays 4-5 p.m.

This high energy, low impact class focuses on strategic movement of different muscles in the body.  Ever done 100 leg lifts? You can give it a try in this class. Muscle is very important in weight loss and staying in shape in general so training of the muscles by repeat motions is beneficial.

Pilates-
Tuesday and Thursday 4-5 p.m.

Similar to trim and tone, but less repetitive, different muscles get worked in a focused manner.  Stretching and strengthening at a slow pace, this class is enjoyable and for all levels.  Come to class stressed, leave relaxed and have worked your body without pain; doesn’t that sound great?!

Zumba-

Tuesdays 5:30-6:30 and Thursdays 8-9 p.m.

If you haven’t given Zumba a try, you’re missing out on one great workout that’s also a party.  Zumba is a full body workout, which burns more calories than you might think, just from aerobic dancing.  The best parts of Zumba are that you don’t feel yourself working, and you don’t have to have any dance experience to partake.  Getting lost in the music, your body will shortly grow a mind of its own.  You’ll feel the rewarding and addictive endorphins Zumba provides, bringing you back for more sweat and satisfaction.  Can’t go wrong here!

Need to work out on your own terms and don’t feel like hitting up the cardio pod? Try spending about 10 dollars for a DVD that can be used over and over again.

I recommend Jillian Michaels. She is brutally tough, yet is effective if you push yourself.  I’ve grown a collection of all her DVDs and the workouts never get old (I’ve had them for 7 months and still haven’t gotten sick of any of the workouts).

The most popular for college students would have to be

30 day shred These 20-minute workouts combine strength training, cardio and abdominal work at a fast pace.

Killer buns and thighs This workout feels like what it sounds.  Afterwards your buns and thighs kill…but in a good way of course.  In 40 minutes you can go from feeling flabby to feeling ready to strut your stuff.

Six week six pack This strategic system combines high intensity interval training with ab exercises all focusing on core conditioning and fat blasting. Remember, you won’t get a six-pack from doing hundreds of crunches; you need to burn fat from throughout the entire body.

Working out can be fun specially when you find something you enjoy because you’ll look forward to working out, try harder, and in return burn more fat and reap the benefits your whole life long. Good luck in your exercise endeavors.  Keep in mind that starting is always the hardest part, but once you get active and addicted your body will not only look amazing, but you will feel amazing as a person.
