A host and a DJ? That he is! A familiar face with a story to tell? That he is! Savannah State’s #1 Event Host has given us a glimpse of how he works his magic and balances the party life and student life. Bryan Thomas, better known as DJ Miami is a senior Criminal Justice Major with many hidden talents. He is also the co-CEO of familiar DJ group TYGDJs at Savannah State, and Public Relations & Marketing Chair of Campus Activities Board at SSU. He is definitely a man with a plan!
Ty: How would you describe your college experience?
DJ Miami: My college experience has been amazing, I really cherish the growth that I have had at Savannah State. It has helped me unlock things that I’ve never seen myself doing.
Ty: What made you choose Savannah State?
DJ Miami: This wasn’t my first choice but it was my best choice. Honestly I came because they accepted me first. But I wouldn’t trade it in for anywhere else.
Ty: As a senior, what do you wish you could’ve told freshman DJ Miami?
DJ Miami: Stay focused, this is your most important year, nobody and nothing is more important than what you came here for.
Ty: What keeps you motivated knowing college can be hard?
DJ Miami: That degree motivates me. To know that I’m so close to accomplishing a major goal in my life it keeps me focus so that I can get through hard times.
Ty: What is your favorite part about college?
DJ Miami: My favorite part about college is getting to know different people from different places and learning their stories and what they come from. It’s always interesting to find people who know the same people you know & getting to know people who may have a major or even a minor impact on your life
Ty: What was your favorite memory as a freshman?
DJ Miami: Hoooomeeeeecoooommminnng. Man my homecoming freshman year was amazing nothing will ever top that. I remember the late night block parties in the commons and in the circle. Fireworks being thrown lol it was just crazy out there & to top it off we had a surprise performance by Migos. It was too lit.
Ty: What advice can you give incoming freshmen?
DJ Miami: Stay focused but get involved. Get to know some people. Socialize and have fun but never forget what you came here for. Also friendships come and go everyone you come in with won’t leave with you so don’t ever be afraid to be independent and tread alone sometimes.
Ty: If you could go back and relive or redo any experience in college, what would it be?
DJ Miami: Once again that homecoming my freshman year I would do that over and over lol.
Ty: Who’s your biggest inspiration?
DJ Miami: I have a few. My mother, my grandmother, and my girlfriend I call them my three queens. My mother and my grandmother raised me and motivated me to be a hard-working young man no matter what. They motivate me to keep pushing with the words of a encouragement and their prayers. My girlfriend motivates me to be better as well ever since she’s been in my life everything has elevated. Without her by my side I don’t know how I could push to do everything I do. I love her.
Ty: What are you most proud of accomplishing in college?
DJ Miami: Everything up to this point is a great accomplishment. I’ve been through a lot of things during my college career. Ups and downs but at the end of the day my greatest accomplishment is that I’m still standing.
Ty: What is your major and why did you choose it?
DJ Miami: Surprisingly when I tell people this they never believe me. Everyone always thinks that I’m a mass communication major. However that’s not the case, my major is Criminal Justice and the reason I chose it is because before I got into being a DJ and an event Host, I wanted to be a police officer more specifically a homicide detective. So if this entertainment thing doesn’t work out that’s what I’ll do.
Ty: What do you hope to accomplish after graduation?
DJ Miami: After graduation I plan on doing radio. Hopefully I will have my own or be apart of a radio show on a big market such as Atlanta or Miami. I’m also good at radio promotions so that is an option as well.
Ty: What are 3 fun facts you would like our readers to know about you?
DJ Miami: This is a hard one. But three fun facts that I would like people to know I have a hidden talent and that’s bowling. I love to bowl so much that I have a personal bowling ball and bowling shoes so if anybody wants this pressure come get it LOL. Another fun fact about me would be that I like to cook a lot and I’m pretty good at it. The last fun fact about me that people probably don’t know is that I sing that was my first love and the first thing entertainment wise that I’ve ever done.
Ty: If you could change anything about your college career, what would it be?
DJ Miami: To be honest everything that I’ve been through in college has made me into The man I am today. So I don’t think I will go back and change anything.
Ty: How important is a college education to you?
DJ Miami: I think college education is very important. Without a college education, I don’t know what I’d be able to do in life. College helps you develop yourself more as an adult so the education along with the experience is something that I’m very grateful for.
Ty: What are you looking forward to for the upcoming year?
DJ Miami: This year I’m looking forward to the experiences that I will have inside the classroom and outside of the classroom as I enter my final year. I’m excited to see what Savannah has in store for us.
Ty: Why did you become a DJ? How important is music to you?
DJ Miami: One of my best friends DJ PT Playa was the one that started me up in this game. We used to practice in his room when we stayed in Bostic hall our freshman year. At first I was doing it just for fun and then I started taking it serious because I fell in love with it. All in all it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Ty: What is the most memorable party you’ve DJ? Why?
DJ Miami: One of the most memorable parties that I did hosting was homecoming last year. Although towards the end it got a little restless because we were waiting on the artist to come, before then it was beyond turnt with my infamous swag surf and the “we get turnt up” dance in the arena LOL. That had to be one of the most fun parties I’ve ever had to host.
Ty: Who helps you the most with your DJ career?
DJ Miami: A few people help me with my music career. My whole Dj team TYGDjs which is a allstar dj group consisting of some of my closest friends and DJs. Dj PT Playa, Dj Keesh, Dj Lowlyfe, Dj LayLay, Dj Prodigy, Dj Savage & Heem2Real. They all help me and we all help each other by keeping up with the culture around us. I also have a good amount of influences that are currently doing big things in the music industry that help me elevate my music career.
Ty: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
DJ Miami: In five years I see myself having a nationally syndicated radio show. That’s my major goal.
Ty: What do you have planned this year for SSU?
DJ Miami: Well being that I am Savannah State’s number one event Host, you know I have a lot of parties planned on and off campus for us. The teams that I work with are working hard to have this semester be the best semester that we have ever had at Savannah State. I already have about five parties lined up in August. A few in September, October, and November. Also if you didn’t know I am the Public Relations and Marketing Chair for our Campus Activities Board. I have been in CAB for three years now and I can honestly say that this year will be the best for our students. We have a lot of great things planned to make this semester and next semester the most legendary that we have ever seen.
