I love food and I am always looking to find new places to eat in Olean. I am from Fairfield, CT, which is a town known for their restaurants. People come from all over the state to come eat in Fairfield. Something that was a change for me when coming to Olean is how popular fast food is. Where I am from, we have two McDonald’s locations and a few Chipotles, and that’s it. Whenever I come back to school, I always missed having my favorite salad place that I go to or my all-time favorite smoothie bowl place called Playa Bowl. Due to Olean being a lower-income town, fast food is a great choice for many people around here. It is quick, tasty, and inexpensive. The issue with fast food is that it is extremely unhealthy for your body especially if you are consuming it all the time.

Don’t get me wrong though, I enjoy fast food and will treat myself to Wendy’s 4 for 4 and Taco Bell whenever I feel like it. I wouldn’t say that I am a health freak by any means, but I have always been someone who enjoys eating healthy. It makes me feel good and gives me energy. I discovered Sage Health and Wellness last spring but never got a chance to go and try it. It is located on 1115 W State St., a 5-minute drive from campus. My friend and I went for the first time last week and enjoyed every bit of what we got.

Sage is a market/café. When you walk in there are some tables and chairs that you can eat at. The interior design is so beautiful that I had to take a minute to walk around before I ordered. Sage also doesn’t just serve food they also sell products such as skin care, essential oils, natural alternative medicine, vitamins, etc. They also host workshops there like yoga, or they will have a nutritionist come in. On the website they say, “One of our main focuses at Sage Health and Wellness is nutrition. We strive to help others be their best self through education. We provide a variety of services including one-on-one nutrition consulting as well as group classes and diet support.” I think this is such a great thing to have available for people.

Sage is beyond just a healthy café. But I know what you’re thinking…what are some of the things you can you get to eat off the menu? They sell juices, smoothies, smoothie bowls, wraps, avocado toast, pasta, salads, soups and more. I ordered the “Blue Majik Bowl,” this bowl was literally blue! The ingredients were all fresh. It included, banana, pineapple, chia seeds, shredded coconut, granola and almond milk. To any of the bowls you can also add a “suggested booster” which is protein powder, so, you can get in some protein, too! One of the smoothies that I want to try next time is called “Creamsicle” which includes orange, vanilla, carrots, and almond milk. Yum! If you are someone who is gluten-free or vegan, Sage is definitely a place for you. I am allergic to eggs and they have a variety of vegan desserts which is so great. They have homemade gluten-free and vegan muffins…delicious. On their website they say, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” So, what are you waiting for?! Go try it!
