I love baseball.

Well, to be more specific, I love the New York Yankees.

As a native New Yorker and growing up less than an hour away from Yankee Stadium, the blue and white pinstripes were in my heart from a young age. Some of my earliest memories as a kid during the months of June, July and August were spent taking the 5 p.m. train down to the Bronx with my cousins. These days were filled with laughter, eating buttery popcorn that ended up getting all over my fingers and ending the game off in the eighth inning with some chocolate ice cream in a baseball hat cup that I took home and used for weeks on end.

As my love for the Yankees and the game of baseball and I have gotten older, I appreciate all that it brings to my life. It was a pattern for me. Every night, no matter what, at 7:05 when the first pitch for the weekday Yankee game was thrown, my family was sitting there, locked in on the tv for the next two and a half hours. Everyone gets busy, parents’ work, schoolwork piles up but knowing that I at least get two hours with my family after a long day made me appreciate the Yankees a little more.

It’s hard to not get emotional about baseball. Six long months of back-to-back games every day is a grueling season. And as an avid fan it was an emotional roller coaster. My family and friends like to make fun and say that my emotional state shouldn’t be determined on if the Yankees are winning or not. But it does, when you are a fan, not even just with the Yankees or sports, but really anything in general, you don’t want it to end.

And although when the Yankee season comes to an end without ring twenty-eight, tears are not brought to my eyes. But, I do let myself live in that frustration as a fan and as a New Yorker that lives and breathes New York sports.

I love Yankee fans and every trait that might come with them. Passionate, mean, aggressive, rowdy, and my favorite, annoying. I love having all of that. Being so passionate about something gives you almost a second family, and rooting so hard for something that you are so beyond passionate about is something that makes you so individually you.

So, hating the Boston Red Sox, booing anyone that’s not in pinstripes, and maybe being a little too passionate about the game is all something that I love beyond words. And as the month of October continues on and the Yankees hope to keep winning in the playoffs, I will still be watching, even though it may look a little different this postseason.
