Halloween is such a great time for all things spooky. It’s also the time when there are lots of work either in art or movie form about supernatural creatures. The kind that hunt you after dark.
I’m a sucker for fantasy and supernatural novels especially with a little sprinkle of romance in it. It’s where I’ve learned a lot about the background and legends of different supernatural creatures. So, here are my two favorite supernatural creatures and what makes them so good.
1. Vampires
Let us never forget the Twilight era! And the Vampire Diaries era! As a child, my first exposure to vampires was through the show, My Babysitter’s a Vampire. It was briefly on Disney Channel and eventually they stopped airing it. It’s about a teenager, Ethan, who finds out that his babysitter is a vampire. So are some of his friends. His best friend, Benny, is a spell master. The two of them battle supernatural forces while dealing with high school troubles. It’s a very cute show that doesn’t take things too far.
Then I was exposed to Twilight. I became obsessed. Not so much with Edward and Bella but more of the kind of vampire that Edward is. He and his family are so different. The vampires that are introduced throughout the series are so unique. They have powers and rules and the worldbuilding was amazing. That’s when I started reading vampire fantasy books. After that I was (and still am) convinced that a vampire is the best supernatural creature.
Vampires are immortal. They can’t die unless you chop off their head or stake them through the heart. Vampires have a very keen sense of smell and sight. Everything about them is enhanced like their speed and reflexes. What more perfect creature can exist? They have a human form so they can pass for humans. Except for the canine teeth but that’s okay. Some vampires have poisonous fangs while others can release a hormone to make their bite pleasurable. They can seduce you with just a look and control your mind if they wanted to. No matter what kind of creature you mix it with a vampire hybrid is still very superior. I could go on and on for days, but I truly believe that vampires are the superior supernatural creature.
2. Fairies
You might think that fairies are not that scary. I beg to differ. Great stories and folklore of fairies have been around since at least the 13th century. Sometimes they’re called the Little People or the Hidden People. The most popular work of art involving fairies is A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare. That’s where you meet Oberon, the King of the Fairies and his queen Titania. You meet Puck, the immortal trickster. When I was 11 years old, I picked up a book at my school’s library called The Iron King by Julie Kagawa. My life was forever changed after that. I devoured the Iron Fey series and have always gone back to reread it over the years. The series features the above named characters and many more.
I learned about the Seelie and Unseelie courts and what kind of magic fairies possess. Oh, they can be SO cruel. Banshees have ear-piercing screams that announce your death before it happens. Kelpies lurk in the water waiting to lure you to your death so they can eat you. There’s so many more. You know what they say about fairy food too. Once you eat their food, you’ll be put under a spell and can’t ever leave them. Once you manage to get away who knows how many years will have passed.
Fairies can be little and green. Or big and blue. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are royal and some aren’t. In Sarah J. Maas’s series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, fairies are so feared that there is wall separating them from humans. They are capable of controlling massive amounts of armies and could boil your blood from the inside with a look.
To sum it up, I would not want to mess with any kind of fairy because the consequences can be very severe.
So, now that I have hyped myself up on vampires and fairies, I’m going to order some books from Amazon.
Have a safe Halloween! Don’t bring home any vampires or fairies with you.
