My Guilty Pleasure – Glee Covers

Before I lose you, let me explain. I’m someone who can’t be productive without background noise, whether that be my most recent playlist or a talkative friend joining me for a study session. If I do not opt for either of those choices, I usually put on an episode of a show I’ve already watched to ensure I have my mindless background noise, but recently, I’ve been in a sort of TV slump.

With midterms and schoolwork ramping back up after our break last week, I just can’t commit to watching anything new (thus devoting precious brain space to following the plot), and with Netflix kicking me off our family account, I can’t bring myself to continue pestering my dad for codes verifying that I’m “traveling” in order to watch Outer Banks. It’s been quite the ordeal, and I fear my already-poor study habits are taking a hit in this first week back on campus.

However, it seems that my dilemma was actually the universe sending me a message to broaden my search for a new study-show (thank you Dad for graciously allowing me to use your, like, five different subscriptions). Finally, after scouring Max, Prime Video, and even Paramount Plus, I found exactly what I was looking for. I am slightly embarrassed to announce that, after like, seven years or something, I am officially in my Glee renaissance, and even more embarrassed to announce that my Spotify playlists may have had some new additions. Thank you, Hulu.

So, buckle your seatbelts, because after blowing through the first two seasons within a week and stealing inspiration from several Glee-focused Spotify playlists, here are my favorite Glee covers so far, and dare I say I might like a few better than the original songs, though I’ll omit from saying which ones in order to avoid being part of a potential music scandal.

In no particular order, and with minor commentary:

  • Stereo Hearts
  • How Deep Is Your Love
  • We Are Young
  • Shake It Out
  • We Found Love
  • Valerie
  • Smooth Criminal – an obvious choice
  • Survivor/ I Will Survive
  • Glad You Came
  • Billionaire
  • Locked Out of Heaven
  • Take Me to Church – HOZIER MENTIONED?
  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Cough Syrup – perfection. I <3 Darren Criss
  • The Scientist – sobbing
  • Lucky – also sobbing
  • Somebody to Love
  • Mercy
  • Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself) – sad version :(
  • Somebody That I Used to Know

Special Category for The Warblers (carried by Blaine Anderson), the obviously superior show choir team (again, I’m sorry):

  • Bills, Bills, Bills
  • Hey, Soul Sister
  • Animal
  • Misery
  • Somewhere Only We Know
  • Raise Your Glass

So, if you can get past your dislike for Rachel Berry (or maybe don’t know her yet), I swear you won’t be disappointed.

From Buffalo, New York, Sofi is a junior English major with a biology minor at St. Bonaventure University. This year Sofi will be helping to run the chapter’s Instagram and VSCO as social media officer! Beyond Her Campus, Sofi plays for the school’s club soccer team, tutors in the Writing Lab, and is in the process of her first research project with the psychology department. When she is not watching Outer Banks or making yet another new Spotify playlist, Sofi can often be found walking the Allegheny River Valley Trail or curling up with a good book (typically of the romantasy genre). Sofi also loves snowboarding at Holiday Valley during the wintertime, and rooting for the Bills every week. Though Sofi is always sad when summer comes to an end, she is so excited to be reunited at last with her Bonas family, and with graduation fast approaching this May, Sofi plans to make every minute count before her undergrad days come to an end.
