With the holiday season approaching the only thing on my mind in class is Thanksgiving. I am a Christmas girl, however the appetizer to Christmas is Thanksgiving. I actually do love the feeling of getting together with my family, especially this year as I have not seen them in a while since I am now a full time college student. However, we all know the best part of Thanksgiving is the food. So, here are a few of my favorite picks that are worth your time to fill up on.
5. Cranberry Sauce
This is such an underrated dish in my opinion. I make the cranberry sauce every Thanksgiving in my family. I have perfected over eight years of making what I consider to be the absolute best cranberry sauce ever. A lot of people are not the biggest fan of cranberry sauce, but I think that it really helps to cut the savory aspect of the meal. I think cranberry sauce really only deserves this spot though if it is homemade. I’m telling you, once you have homemade, you cannot go back to the normal canned cranberry sauce. It only takes like 10 minutes and everyone will love it.
4. Stuffing
This is such a hot take, but I do not think stuffing is that good. Do not get me wrong, I love it just as much as the next person. However, it is not something I want to eat as leftovers. I am okay having it one day out of 365, but it is not good enough to eat again the day after. In my family what we do to make the stuffing really good is we put Italian sausage in the stuffing to add flavor to it.
3. green bean CASSEROLE
This dish will forever have such a place in my heart for the nostalgia it brings to me. I will always remember being little and my mom making this dish to take to my grandparents house. For me, I am very much so a ‘veggie girl’, and green beans is one of the things I can eat many servings of. However, the casserole aspect of this with the cream of mushroom soup and the fried onions on top really adds to how good the veggies already are. Even my friends who do not like veggies still love this because the taste is so incredible.
2. Pie
This may seem so controversial, but I will forever be a sweet girl instead of a savory girl. I will literally eat less during Thanksgiving dinner just to save room for pie. I am a pumpkin pie girl though, I do not do apple pie. There is something so good about a piece of pumpkin pie with a little bit of whipped cream on it. Ugh, it’s to die for. After a very savory meal, the best ending is always something sweet.
1. Mashed Potatoes
This is one of my absolute favorite foods ever. If I could eat any food for the rest of my life, it would be mashed potatoes. This is the first thing I will get seconds of on Thanksgiving. This I can eat not only on Thanksgiving, but every day. There is something so good about a spoonful of buttery mashed potatoes. Especially if you put a little bit of gravy on it too. This dish does make me feel full very fast, but it is 100% worth it.
