As I return to campus for my sophomore year of undergrad, I notice that everything feels different. Compared to last year, I am immensely more comfortable with the campus, faculty, and overall “rhythm” of daily life for a college student.Â
Although I am more acclimated to college, I am still anxious that I can achieve a healthy work-life balance. This will be one of my most academically challenging semesters of college. Between rigorous courses, student employment, and involvement in clubs and organizations, I will have limited time to rest and recharge.Â
1.) mindset is everything
Instead of cursing yourself or others for your busy workload, take a moment each day to think about why you chose to study your subject matter. Maybe you are eager to become a teacher, lawyer, or corporate executive. Now shift your mindset to gratitude. I always remind myself of how lucky I am to be studying something I love at a university that I love. When you encounter tough days when you are tempted to give up, gently remind yourself of the positive aspects of your educational journey.Â
2.) keeping it clean
Research has shown that the state of your environment directly impacts your mental health. If your dorm is constantly cluttered, it may be harder to stay focused on any tasks at hand. I try to give myself five minutes at the end of each day to simply put away clothes, throw out trash, and tidy my dorm so the cleaning is more manageable.Â
3.) Be proactive
It is important to establish relationships with professors and tutors as early in the semester as possible. Going to office hours and review sessions is crucial to becoming memorable to your instructors. It’s better to slowly build a connection with these academic professionals rather than solely reaching out when you are struggling.Â
4.) Stay in touch with loved ones
When I am having a bad day at school, I often call my family or friends from back home. I love to hear their voices and share laughter with them- it brightens my mood instantly. Making it a priority to stay up-to-date with friends and family from home can provide a sense of balance and peace during hectic semesters.Â
5.) REst!
I have learned that listening to your body is imperative for a happy life, especially in college. I often overwork myself which can lead to fatigue, burnout, and even sickness. This is something I am promising myself this school year- that rest is non-negotiable. With 24 hours in the day, we can all find some time for ourselves. Committing to deliberate moments of rest and relaxation will lay the foundation for a balanced and rewarding school year.Â
