Rihanna, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Blake Lively: These are the fashion icons of our day. The press often pushes these ladies as the center of attention, more often than not for their style! However, there’s another group that comes into the public’s eye as well-the politicians. Not only are they doing groundbreaking things for their respective countries, but they look great doing it too. They should definitely be commended for their ability to pull together a great look, all while dealing with some of the most controversial issues of our time.
I’ve put together the top 7 Political Fashionistas of our time (in no particular order)-
1-Hilary Rodham Clinton- She has served as Secretary of State, Senator of New York (the first woman elected to the position, might I add), and First Lady. While pantsuits normally don’t scream “trendsetting”, each one of them is diligently tailored to her frame, which shows femininity does not always mean dresses or skirts. Her love for bold accessories, especially pearls, gives a sense of sophistication.
2-Queen Rania of Jordan- (Also known as Rania Al-Abdullah) Since marrying the now King of Jordan, Abdullah bin Al-Hussein, she has recently been well-known for her advocacy work related to education, health, community empowerment, youth, cross-cultural dialogue, and micro-finance.She has been acknowledged for her impeccable fashion sense for many years. Her ability to work a red body-con dress as effortlessly as she does with a simple black dress is amazing. Her go to looks include combining western pieces with some of her own regional style.Â
3-Nancy Pelosi-Nancy Patricia D’Alessandro Pelosi is the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives and served as the 52nd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011. Nancy has been known to prove that red is in fact “the new black”. She has shown us that you don’t need to wear black to look official. Pearls, classic stilettos and a black leather handbag are the perfect combination to add class to the daring pop of color.Â
4-Narendra Modi- Narendra Damodardas Modi is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India. Modi, a leader of the Bharatiya Janta Party, was also the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is a Member of Parliament from Varanasi. It is said that Mr. Modi works for twenty hours out of the twenty-four hour time span, yet despite this he manages to look sharp and stylish. He wears mostly linen and khadi kurtas in muted colors paired with sharply-tailored jackets, which makes his signature style spot on. He has also been seen mixing colors and styles. His signature look has influenced a lot of people to wear half jackets, also known as Nehru Jacket, which has now become a major trend in India.
5-Marco Rubio– Marco Antonio Rubio is an American attorney, politician, and junior United States Senator from Florida. Rubio has previously served as the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. Who said heels are only for the ladies? Marco Rubio’s boot heels have made national headlines in the USA. Cuban heels are relished by British pop stars and South American soccer players, but most American men haven’t caught on to this trend– since this doesn’t quite match their prevailing idea of masculinity. Marco Rubio has tried to set a new style for the men of his country.
6-Enrique Peña Nieto- Enrique Peña Nieto is the 57th President of Mexico. His six-year term began in 2012. A member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, he served as the governor for the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011. This Mexican president deserves applause for his particularly polished suit-and-tie look. Nieto rocks well-tailored suits and colorful ties with a special flare.Â
7-Sonia Gandhi-Sonia Gandhi is an Italian-born Indian politician, who has served as President of the Indian National Congress party since 1998. She is the widow of former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi who belonged to the Nehru–Gandhi family. She was ranked as one of the most powerful women in the world by Forbes. This powerful politician wears elaborate saris in bright colors. She keeps her hair in tasteful styles, usually tied back, and commonly adheres to the fashion philosophy that “style is to be simple.”
