A Lesson on Things That Are Hard To Accept

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Scranton chapter.

Acceptance is the act or process of being received as adequate or suitable. Such a simple, comprehendible definition, yet a vast majority of women and men struggle daily with acceptance, especially in their personal life. I am part of this majority, but I am slowly learning to accept many things about myself and my life. I’m hoping these few things I have learned will come to be some things you will also learn.

1. Your expectations are just that, your expectations

People are not obligated to live up to them or abide by them. Even if in certain cases they are obligated to do so, there is no absolute guarantee that they will or even can do so. So don’t base your plans on that. Don’t base your life on that.

2. You can walk away, but so can they.

You can be hurt. And you can be mad. But, they will still walk away. They have that option. They can exercise that choice. People can grow toxic for you, and believe it or not, so can you.

3. People have bullied you, have hurt you, teased you, judged you.

But the person who does so the most, is often yourself. And it is often the harshest.

4. Not letting go may only keep you sad and frustrated and stuck.

They are unaffected. They are living their life wonderfully. They are free. Now, it’s your turn.

5. Taking care of yourself takes effort.

It’s not just feel good quotes and appealing aesthetics. It’s work, a lot of work. It’s doing things that take time and sometimes it’s doing things you don’t want to do. But you are your top priority.

6. It’s gone.

The past. You can regret as much as you like, but you’re only wasting your present time.

7. Sometimes you are going to use the word love, even when you don’t fully believe it.

It’s because like is far too little and there has yet to be a word in between. It’s because we use the same word for pizza and for people. It’s because love has a vast majority of definitions. It’s because you do love them, maybe just like you love pizza though.

8. Sometimes, you just have to suck it up.

It’s okay. Not every situation is meant for you to show your “true courage” or real feelings.
