Scranton men’s basketball has been a prime example of how hard work and dedication pays off. Last year the men’s basketball team finished their season with a (24-4) record and the title of Landmark Conference Champions. The Royals’ fan base exemplifies school spirit. The turnout for the first game was more than expected. The stands were packed with students and their families and friends ready for the game.
As of Saturday’s game, in the PNC Bank/ Radisson Invitational, Scranton has the number one standing in the Landmark Conference. The Royals have plans to 3-peat winning the Landmark Conference Champions title. Two-year captain, Ross Danzig, is excited about the season. “We feel good. The team is ready. We have a lot of guys returning from last year and we are highly confident,” Danzig said. The confidence from the captains and a strong start for the Royals adds to the excitement for this upcoming season.
Game day rituals for athletic teams are common. The Royals’ game day ritual is to play a friendly game of knock out. “We want to keep it light, goof off and have fun like the game should be,” Danzig said. Alleviating pressure from players has its benefits. It enables players to enjoy the game they love.
Alex Cammerata, play-by-play announcer for RTN channel 9, has high hopes for this year’s team. “I believe they will win the PNC Bank/ Radisson Invitational. Alvernia scored 92 points in their round of the tournament. When they face Alvernia on Sunday it will be a high-scoring game,” Cammerata said. For the overall season, Cammerata has Scranton to win the conference.
Saturday’s opening game gave fans and competitors a taste of how great this year’s basketball season will be. Junior captain Brendan Boken led the team with 24 points. Boken capitalized on his opportunities at the line, shooting 11 for 15. Boken continues to be an athlete to watch and is ready for his best season yet. Fans are looking forward to the season as well as the return the Landmark Conference Championship and possibly final four in the NCAA tournament.
