You look very pretty today,
The boy says with a slick smile.
However, the girl is filled with dismay.
She knows this isn’t going to last awhile.
“You’re being so dramatic” “you’re acting stupid”,
This is what the girl is starting to believe,
And this is all that the boy has ever concluded.
How can someone have self-esteem when hateful comments are what they receive?
She’s been through this cycle many times.
The boy doesn’t seem to ever care.
It seems like this abuse cycle is his favorite pastime.
The girl often finds herself gasping for air.
No matter how many compliments the boy throws her way,
The girl knows it’s going to be met with twice the amount of awful comments.
However, she never reaches a resolution other than to stay,
Even when her friends put in their two cents.
People often will butt in and say this isn’t okay,
Or they will say the girl is much better than the boy.
The girl quite often thinks she ought to stray,
But she isn’t going to leave someone who brings her joy.
What some people do not understand is, it’s hard to not seek validation,
Especially if that validation is not easy to come by.
The thrill of the boy’s occasional flirtation
causes the girl to dismiss the abuse and deny he’s the bad guy.
