A College Girl’s Review of “Hidden Figures”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCSU chapter.

As I begin my spring semester at Southern as a sophomore, I have a clear idea as to what I want to do with my life. I have dipped my feet into the waters of early education, and so far I am confident that this is the career path that I want to take.

As a female in the work force, it is important that I know my place in society and that my contributions are just as important as anyone else’s. With this in mind, I am feeling confident that I will throughly enjoy the newly released movie Hidden Figures.

Prior to viewing this movie, I had not known that NASA’s success with the space mission had, in part, to do with an African American female named Katherine G. Johnson. She was a “human computer” for the space program who was the driving force behind the success of the spacecraft Friendship 7’s Earth orbit.

It is amazing how I have gone 20 years without knowing this. I have learned about the space race and what it entailed, but my history book never touched upon the woman behind it.

After the movie ended and the credits were rolling, I sat there in amazement. I was impressed at how well put together the movie was. The actors were phenomenal and I felt that each actor and actress fit their characters very well. They did a great job of telling the story of these “hidden figures” at NASA and how great an impact they had on the space race.

This movie is an important one for today’s generation of young girls. It shows that we as women can achieve anything we set our minds to, just like men do. The women in this movie showed such resilience to being put down by the whites and especially the men and they kept getting back up and fighting twice as hard.

I greatly enjoyed this movie for the message and also the historical aspect of it. I loved the lessons it gave along with the history being shown. I would definitely recommend that you see this movie because it was very well worth it!
