How to Deal with Loss During the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCSU chapter.

I have found that as the holidays approach, the feeling that something is missing becomes more prominent. As a twenty year old, I have dealt with more loss than a teenager should endure. The fact that a loved one that I appreciated and cared for isn’t there with me is hard enough without having to be reminded about the holidays everywhere I go.

If you have these similar feelings, you are not alone. The most important thing to remember is that there are people around you that love you and care for you. Here are a few ways to help lift your spirits even just a little bit during the holidays…

1. Spend time with your family

I think that this is the most important thing you can do. You are not alone in what you are feeling because your family is feeling the same way.

Talk to a family member that you are close with about what you are thinking. They will understand fully where you are coming from and they may feel the same way. Spend a lot of time with your family and just appreciate the fact that everyone is together.

2. Have a night in with your besties

There’s no better company than your friends. Get together with a your friends and have a night in. Watch some funny movies to lighten and lift the mood. Confiding in your friends is a good idea to do as well. They may be going through the same hardship as you and may know how you feel. Talking about something as personal as this will help your friendship grow closer and stronger.

3. Take a trip into the city

If you’re close enough to the city, take a trip! Plan out a day to sightsee New York City during the holidays. When the city is decorated in lights for the holiday season it is mesmerizing and beautiful. There are so many things you can do in the city that could definitely take your mind off of everything.

Just remember that you are not alone and please seek professional help if you feel that you need it.
