Puerto Rico was once again hit by a catastrophic hurricane only five years after Hurricane Maria. The hurricane was classified as a category 1 storm with wind speeds of 90 mph that left millions without power and running water. President Joe Biden declared a State of Emergency and ordered Federal aid to support Commonwealth and local response initiatives. However, help from the federal government isn’t enough. Below are a few ways you can contribute to organizations dedicated to helping Puerto Ricans recover from the hurricane.

GLOBAL GIVING

This nonprofit has launched a “Hurricane Fiona Relief Fund” that will offer aid to affected communities, both immediately and long-term. They declare “Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors’ immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Then, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted local organizations” (CITE). Your donation will contribute to delivering food and medical supplies, as well as providing shelter, clean water, and hygiene products, along with other services to assist the community.

TALLER SALUD

The Feminist organization based in Puerto Rico is accepting monetary donations as well as items such as nonperishable food, diapers, solar lanterns, toiletries, water filters, etc. You can visit their website here!

WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN

World Central Kitchen supports communities dealing with natural disasters, man-made crises, and humanitarian emergencies. Their website states “We’re a team of food first responders, mobilizing with the urgency of now to get meals to the people who need them most.” They currently have teams on the ground in both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. By donating to their cause, you can support their emergency food relief efforts.

PRPX

Their aid focuses on supplying food, clean water, and renewable energy to communities in need in Puerto Rico. This organization uses 100 percent of its donations to provide humanitarian and disaster aid. Through their website, you can donate, raise awareness by sharing their story, and advocate by requesting support from members of the House and Senate for help and emergency financing.
