You’re probably wondering “why in the world would I care about what this 18 year old has to say?” Truth is, you probably don’t. BUT now that I have your attention why don’t you join me on my short journey?
Now I gotta say, I’m one of those kids whose parents didn’t let them do much, and my parents took on a “helicopter” approach when they started parenting. I would argue it’s more of a “drone” like approach. My parents tracked my phone, I wasn’t allowed sleepovers, I had classes during weekends, and tutoring after school. You must be thinking “Well, she must have amazing grades!” You’re wrong. No seriously. It’s bad. It’s not bad as in “Damn. I only got a B!” Nope. I was a straight C student and my grades never improved. So why am I telling you this? Because now that I’m in university I am having so much fun that my grades didn’t bother me that much. I learnt that life isn’t just about your grades, it’s about learning new things, making new friends, having fun, and achieving your dreams.
For example, I’ve always dreamt about going to a sleepover. Guess what?! NOW I GET SLEEPOVERS EVERY SINGLE DAY! FREEEEEEDOOOOOM! Am I right? You bet that I’m having my best life in college. Learning to finally be independent and not having to ask to “go out”. I DON’T EVEN HAVE CLASSES ON THE WEEKENDS! WHAT?!
Now, I know you’re judging me because “who enjoys living in a dorm?” But that is the best part for me. You gotta enjoy the little things in life! In a few months I think I learnt more about life than I ever did in my 18 years of life. I’m still not really adulting. And I’m still not used to having freedom. But I am enjoying college, and I’m learning to take care of myself. Being in college you get stressed a lot, you will get sick, and you might get homesick(yes, even for me), but I learnt that they’re all small things, there is always something else you can do to make it just a bit better; and when that doesn’t work… talk to your friends because I bet they’re probably feeling the same way too.
