DIYs to “Dye” For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Seton Hall chapter.

Does the cooler rainy fall weather and increased coursework have you feeling the need for a pick-me-up? Items in your wardrobe, room décor, and yummy treats— yes even food— can be revamped bringing you an instant daily dosage of color and happiness. Here are 5 easy DIY’s to dye for…

1.After All, Stressed backwards is Desserts

A quick break from homework can be breaking off a piece of a delicious treat. Microwavable treats like molten chocolate cakes can be found at local grocery stores at a cheap price accommodating your college budget. In the comfort of your dorm room you can heat up a yummy dessert and add your own colorful icing and sprinkles to satisfy your cravings (#TreatYoSelf).

2.Brightest and Wildest Dreams

Going home for fall break? Take up this DIY project to assure sweet and colorful dreams when you’re back at Seton Hall. To make old sheets more vibrant and fun, grab some rubber bands and purchase a tie-dye kit from a local craft store. Using these necessities you can create bright patterns to add pizzazz to plain sheets.

3.Putting Your Best Foot Forward

Missing summer colors and tired of neutral booties filling up your wardrobe? With a pair of white canvas lace-up tennies and craft supplies you can put a little pep in your step. Plain sneakers provide a blank canvas to add your very own design with paint pens. Pick up stud or spike embellishments and a strong adhesive to give your sneakers a more edgy vibe. If you’re looking for a colorful makeover for your old kicks, purchase a spray bottle, liquid fabric dye, and painter’s tape to create a clean-cut ombré effect.

1.Personalize it: BeYOUtiful

Adding new room décor is one of the easiest ways to give character and a pop of color to your room. Inexpensive craft necessities like wooden letters and poster board can be found at art supplies stores for under $5.00. Personalize your desk space with freshly painted wooden letters to spell out your name, initials, or perhaps sorority letters. Poster boards provide a template to create your own masterpiece to brighten up those plain dorm room walls. Gather a group of friends and create colorful artwork or photo collages for one another to hang up and give any space a new look.

5.But First… Coffee

If your #MCM on an early Monday morning is a hot cup of Joe then we have the perfect DIY for you. Say goodbye to groggy morning routines and put a smile on your face while enjoying your favorite caffeinated beverage. Grab any solid colored coffee mug and add designs and quotes with an oil-based paint Sharpie marker. Make sure to have access to a kitchen, use your friend’s apartment or bring it home over fall break, and bake the mug at 350° F for 30 minutes for a no-smudge mug. DIY suggestions, like one found on PopSugar’s website, recommend placing the mug in while the oven is heating up and leaving it in while cooling down to prevent cracks.
