Where are you from & what do you study? I’m from Morris Plains, NJ and I a double major in Elementary & Special Education, and Liberal Studies with a minor in Spanish.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? In my free time, I love to be around people whether it is spending time with my friends at Seton Hall, my friends at home, or my family. I am also very musical so I enjoy listening to music, playing the piano and singing.
What extracurricular activities are you involved with on campus right now and what have you done in the past? Currently, I am the Alumni Relations Secretary of Alpha Phi Omega (Alpha Delta Phi Chapter), a co-chair of the Campus Life committee on Student Activities Board, a member of National Residence Hall Honorary, and a member of Habitat for Humanity. I started my Seton Hall extracurricular career as a member of the Freshman Leadership Council during my first year here. In the past I have also been a member of Boland Hall Council, a team leader for Service on Saturdays, and a Senator for the College of Education and Human Services on the Student Government Association (SGA).
What is one of your favorite SHU groups that you participate in and what is most rewarding about being a member? I really love being a Peer Adviser on campus and it has certainly been the most rewarding experience of my time at Seton Hall. It’s always enjoyable getting to know my students and learning about where they come from. I love that I have the opportunity help them deal with any problems they face within their first year at Seton Hall. I have had such a fantastic experience at Seton Hall thus far, and being able to share that with my students is a great feeling. Also, working for the Freshman Studies Family – both mentors and Peer Advisers – is a blast! There’s never a dull moment in our offices.
What is your favorite SHU memory so far? I have a tie for two favorite memories at Seton Hall so far. My first was pledging and becoming a brother of Alpha Phi Omega. I pledged in the first semester of my freshman year, and many of the people in my pledge class are still some of my closest friends. I learned essential leadership skills and what it means to be a brother of APO through my interactions with the upperclassmen in the organization. The second memory that ties for first is attending Peer Adviser training each June. All of the Peer Advisers spend a couple of weeks together in June living in Boland, doing teambuilder activities, and learning how to connect with our students. Some of my hardest laughs at Seton Hall have taken place in the Pirate’s Cellar!
What are your plans for after graduation? I’m still not 100% positive about what I want to do after graduation because that a little over a year away (so I guess that’s okay still?) I would definitely like to take part in a year-long term of service right after I graduate. Ideally, I am looking at applying for Americorps NCCC, a team-based service program for 18-24 year olds. After my term of service – whatever it ends up being – I would like to spend a few years teaching in an elementary school and save up money to attend grad school. Within 5-10 years of graduating, I would like to study for a Master’s Degree in School Counseling in order to become a guidance counselor.
What would be your dream job? I’m not totally positive what my dream job is but I definitely think it would be either teacher or guidance counselor. Eventually I would like to work in an elementary school as a guidance counselor to help students learn about conflict resolution, dealing with stress, and working with students on mediation regarding bullying or other incidents. Wherever my crazy ambitious plans take me, I know I want to end up in a job where I can make people’s lives better. No matter what I do, I want co-workers, students, and parents to leave my presence and say “Thanks Moira, you have been very helpful today.”
What are you most excited for in 2012? Well the two things I was most excited for in 2012 have already passed. The first was going to El Salvador with DOVE in January, when I happened to celebrate my 21st birthday during the trip. The second thing I was excited for was going to Birmingham, Alabama this past week on Spring Break with SHU’s Habitat for Humanity. So now, I shift my focus to getting excited for the Pirate Adventures in June, because that means Peer Adviser training and meeting new students to welcome them to the Seton Hall family. :)
