10 Things To Look Forward To For Family Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sewanee chapter.

Family Weekend is upon us. Whether your parents are on Parent Council and are already here, or if they are driving up soon, there is so much to look forward to! Here are some of the highlights of this much anticipated weekend:

1. Opening Convocation is one of the many Family Weekend traditions. Whether you are being gowned or supporting a friend being gowned, this event is unique and special to Sewanee students and alums. Some students may even get the privilege of having one of their parents, if alumni, gown them.  And if not, they have the hope that maybe one day in the very distant future, they can gown their son or daughter on Family Weekend.

Pictured above is our wonderful editor, Annie, getting gowned by her mother, a member of the Order herself!

2. Clurg steps up its game to impress our folks! Let’s face it, we are blessed most of the time with the food in McClurg, but sometimes we get tired of the same-old-same-old.  However, during Family Weekend, Clurg makes it a point to be top notch!

3. If upscale-Clurg still doesn’t do it for you, you have parents present who can take you somewhere else.  Milk this perk for all it’s worth. I mean, hey, if you love food, you love food
so go to High Point! go to Pearls! Family Weekend is a perfect excuse to eat like Kings and Queens.

4. Take your family to see just what inspired those Instagram and Facebook pictures that they have been seeing.  Some parents may not be as adventurous and would prefer to not do the Perimeter Trail, but you can still go to Green’s View and the Cross by car! And if they want to see more, then by all means, take them hiking!

5. Learn what your professors really think of you. During Family Weekend, professors encourage parents to come by and meet them. This is the perfect opportunity to prove to your parents that you really are Working Hard. After all, they want to be assured that their money is going to go use. (It’s a major plus to hear positive feedback after many sleepless nights leading up to Midterms right before this special weekend)

6. After you finish number 5, you can celebrate by going to a special place.  During Family Weekend, the Sewanee Party scene moves elsewhere
THE ASSEMBLY. This is a magical place where you can walk from house to house and enjoy not only socializing with peers, but also parents.

7. Family Weekend brings people together. Whether getting to meet the Vice Chancellor for the first time or meeting your dad’s old roommate’s son, you are sure to meet at least one new person through your parents. You may even make a new best friend that you would have never talked to if it weren’t for the unusual weekend events.

8. The Sewanee Theatre Department will be debuting their show, SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, which is a musical revue. If partying in the Assembly isn’t your scene, then take your rents for a night at the theatre!

9. Saturday is Game Day! If you grew up watching football with your family, then this is the perfect opportunity to give back by taking pride in YOUR TEAM and sharing it with your family. And don’t forget to teach them the Sewanee chant:

“Tigers, Tigers, leave ‘em in the lurch.

Down with the Heathens. Up with the Church.

Yea Sewanee’s Right!”

10. Whether you took them to Convocation on Friday, or they are alums, your parents are not going to be able to get enough of the beauty of All Saints. The Sunday Morning service is a perfect way to end a great Family Weekend. *(And this is a great photo op for Christmas Cards!)

So enjoy this weekend. Savor it. And if your parents can’t make it, tag along with someone else’s family. There’s sure to be plenty of familial love to go around, and everyone in the Sewanee Community is family as it is! Yea, Sewanee’s Right!
