So, let’s face it. You remember watching movies in high school of what it’s like to go to a big football game at a State school. Or, maybe you have been to games with your family as you were growing up. If you came to Sewanee thinking you would have the same experience, you were in for a shock. Here is a list of things that are unique about GAME DAY at Sewanee and what makes Saturdays in the Fall my favorite:
Dressing up
If you go to a State School football game, you may find a variety of outfits ranging from jerseys and jeans to dresses with bows. However, in correlation with class dress, our game day style tips more towards the sophisticated side. My personal favorite involves wearing a dress and pearls with cowboy boots for comfort. You will, of course, find all kinds of variations of this, and some brave souls might wear heels to make a bold statement. But the point is, Saturday mornings offer an opportunity to dress up and soak up that last bit of summer sun before the fall chill hits.
Tailgating
Because who doesn’t love dressing up and going to a Frat with your girlfriends for an open bar mid-morning. Day drinking is a wonderful thing that we can enjoy most when it’s still warm out. And, if you’re lucky and choose the same Frat, you can see that cutie from your English class dressed up in khakis and a tie! This kind of tailgate is different from the typical State-school tailgate, involving eating burgers and sitting around the open bed of a truck, but I personally like the sophistication of going to a Frat Lodge better.
Knowing the Players
If you go to a State School, you might know one or two big-time players by name because of hearing about them all the time, but chances of knowing them personally are slim and few. However, at Sewanee, not only might the QB be in your Spanish class, but you might have played pong against the running back last weekend. Thanks to the unique Sewanee community, these players are more than just a symbol of the football team to us…they are our friends.
Oh, and if all of these things aren’t reason enough for you to go and support your fellow classmates, THE GAMES ARE FREE WITH A STUDENT ID!
So now that you’re convinced that this is THE BEST WAY to spend your Saturday morning/afternoons, here are some other fun things to keep an eye out for:
1. The Highlanders and the Wellingtons (special drinking societies who sport capes and kilts at games
2. Our newly started pep-band
3. The beautiful cheerleaders
4. You can always try to find Dean Hagi and give him a hug…And maybe if you’re lucky, you can pet his new puppy!
