“How Does She Know That You Love Her?” Date Ideas for Valentines Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sewanee chapter.

When it comes to being in a relationship at Sewanee, it isn’t necesarily about the huge elaborate displays of affection. Instead, it’s more about showing each how much you care by doing the little things.  Valentine’s Day is no exception.  Some people think that it is just a commercialized holiday for the purposes of Hallmark, florists, and candy venders; however, this is no excuse to just ignore it.

Some fraternities will be be handing out roses and serenading the Valentines of their brothers, while some single ladies will be trecking to a movie theater to see romantic movies that feed their dreams about future significant others.  But what do we ladies with current significant others do on this day? Here is a list of potential dates on which you can suggest going.  (And no matter what, tell your man that it isn’t about the quality of the restaurant or the presents y’all exchange.  What really matters is the quality of the company!)

1. DuPont Study Date
You may roll your eyes at this one, but if you are both swamped with homework and are “too busy” to enjoy Valentine’s Day, then spend time TOGETHER doing your work! Any activity can be a date if you make it one.
2. Go to Dinner
Sure, Clurg is a fine date place if you make it one, but sometimes it’s nice to ditch the cafeteria style and go out. Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to have someting other than the usual Homeline, Pizza, Wok, or Vegan Line.  This does not have to entail anything fancy. The options are endless: anything from Waffle House in Monteagle to Yamato in Winchester to the fancy and oh so yummy High Point.
Check out this previous article about restaurants to try.
3. Take a Day Trip
If one of you is privileged enough to own a car or borrow one from a friend, I suggest getting your man to take you to Chattanooga. The drive is only a little over an hour and is so worth it.  Whether he takes you on a walk Downtown or takes you to the Aquarium and then to dinner, this is sure to be a good change from the usual dates you go on in Sewanee, Monteagle, or Winchester.
4. Go Hiking
If you do not have the means to leave campus, then enjoy the Domain. The forecast is looking like it’ll be semi-cloudy and in the 30s or 40s this Saturday (granted that may change), but if the weather is nice, take advantage of it! Going hiking is one of my favorite kinds of dates. It allows for a combination of exercise, enjoying nature, and enjoying the company of the person you are with!
5. Go to the Drive-in
While I myself have not been yet, I have heard that the Montana Drive In (located right by Tullahoma) is a great option for a date night. It’s a great excuse to get off campus and snuggle up to your Valentine.
Here’s their website with more information.
6. Go Frat-hopping
Yes, this is something you can do every other weekend, but there is a particular perk to going our with your man (especially on a day like Valentine’s Day): you do not have to worry about being flirty or trying to catch the eyes of guys around you.  I remember being single and going out on Valentine’s Day thinking that I would be FOREVER ALONE if a cute boy didn’t try to swing dance with me or talk to me.  This is not true! There are benefits to being single and in a relationship, but know that you can have fun either way! If you are in a relationship, then it is the perfect excuse to drag your man out to whatever party is happening that night and make him dance with you!
7. Stay In
While Valentine’s Day may make you think that you HAVE to go out on some fancy date, sometimes the best dates are spent in your dorm room just talking and watching Netflix.  Whether you get take-out from somewhere and bring it back or choose to eat Clurg beforehand, the only main thing to keep in mind on this day is the IMPORTANCE OF BEING TOGETHER.  You can snuggle up and watch a movie or binge watch on y’alls favorite Netflix show. The choice is up to you. But no matter what, focus on enjoying each other’s company!
