SUPERGIRL: A New Kind of Hero

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sewanee chapter.

“I was sent to earth when my planet, Krypton, was dying.”

“I feel like I’ve heard this story before.”

THIS IS MY STORY…

The hit CBS show Supergirl rececently aired its second season, being adopted by the CW.  If you haven’t seen this show yet, you need to turn on Netflix and kick back and watch this amazing show! We’ve all heard of all the superhero shows like The Arrow, The Flash, Daredevil, etc, but it was about time that we were given a girl we could all look up to – and you’ll find that this show is about a lot more than Supergirl just being the COUSIN of Superman.

Reasons to watch the show:

  • Despite having a Bada$$ girl to root for as she fights other aliens and bad guys, there’s also endless humor!

“My heart is still racing from chasing after a zig-zagging missile. I kind of felt like Harry Potter playing quidditch” –Kara/Supergirl

  • Along with the quirks of every day life, Supergirl, Kara Danvers also has a pushy but inspiring boss, revealing that despite having super powers, she hast to still work her butt off in the real world. Also, it is through working with Cat Grant (her boss and the CEO of CatCo, the news source) that Kara learns real confidence and power that comes from within.
  • She has just as much trouble with boys and any other normal human girl.
  • The cast is SUPERB! (Not only does the woman who played Supergirl in the 1984 film play Kara’s adoptive mother, but her adopted father played Clark Kent in a hit show called Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman).
  • There are crossovers with other superhero shows like the Flash and DC Legends of Tomorrow.

Supergirl isnt just an enjoyable show, it’s an encouragement to women to be something great, anything they want.  Kara did not want to be herself at the beginning of the show because she figured her cousin (Superman) had the superhero-from-another-planet thing covered.  But she realized that in order to be true to herself, she could not hide her powers or her call to help others.  Sure we can’t exactly save the wrold like her, but we do not need superstrength or xray vision or flying abilities to contribute something to the world. We just have to go out there, believe in ourselves, and try. We may fail – after all, Supergirl makes many mistakes in the show – but we need to get right back up and try again. Just because a man has succeeded at something, does not mean that there isn’t room for women to be great too.  I know that every time I watch an episode of this amazing show, I feel empowered and capable to do something worthwhile with my life.
