Midterm exams were the past two weeks and, for some students, the stress level may have been at an all-time high. Students at SFA enjoy running or hiking the local trails of Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas, to cope with the stresses of a college student. These trails have helped display Nacogdoches’ wildlife and beautiful piney woods.Â
SFA Recreational Trails
Located on the corner of Starr Avenue and N. University Drive, these trails are a combination of both hiking and biking. It includes eight miles of hidden trails throughout the 30-plus acres. These trails will get the blood pumping with steep climbs, tight and twisty paths and jumps. If you do plan on riding a bike through these trails, I suggest wearing a helmet for sure.
Banita Creek Trail
This is the newest trail in Nacogdoches. It runs along Banita Creek on the west side of town. It stretches as far as 1.9 miles and even includes some waterfalls that eventually connect with Hoya Park and Lanana Creek Trail. You’ll be submerged in shagbark hickory, Florida maple and tree sparkleberry. However, there is also a train that runs parallel with Banita Creek which may put an asterisk on your hike.
Lanana Creek Trail
This is easily the most popular trail in Nacogdoches and by far my favorite. It is being used at almost every moment of the day. You can start the trail at E Austin Street and hike or run 3.5 miles all the way until you hit Hoya Park and Banita Creek Trail close to E Main Street. This trail goes up and down, twists and turns throughout dogwood and scarlet-blooming buckeye. Don’t worry about dehydration because there are several water fountains on the trail.
With the extremely hot Texas summer weather nearly behind us, it is the perfect time and weather to get out there for a morning jog or afternoon hike. Happy Fall, y’all.Â
