Entering the Real World

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFA chapter.

who am i & what is this series about?

Who am I?

My name is Amanda and I have recently entered the challenging yet eventful world of adulthood. With graduation getting closer by the day, I can feel my anxiety and fear for the “Real World” rising. For the past year and a half, I have been slowly finding more ways to become independent and take care of myself. Ever since I moved out of the dorm rooms at my university, I have been responsible for taking care of my rent, groceries, energy bill, internet bill, and any other expense or purchase I need to make. I was extremely fortunate to find a job that I could do from home that also paid well enough to take care of all my bills. The main reason why I strive to be more independent is because I want to relieve financial stress off of my parents. It’s only fair that I start taking care of myself and my needs/wants as I get closer to joining the workforce. I have a rough plan for where I see myself after graduation, but that largely depends on my boyfriend and where he decides to go for graduate school. Since he is graduating in May, I have a little bit of time to explore my options and see what jobs are available in my field. I am graduating with a bachelor’s degree in General Agriculture with a concentration on Animal Science; This is because I want to have a career working with wildlife animals in a zoo setting. There is much to explore in this field, so that also adds it’s own level of stress to my post-graduation self. The list of things I need to take care of or plan for goes on and on which is why I wanted to share my thoughts, experiences, and advice on entering this crazy world.

What is this series about?

For this series, I want to talk about the different stresses of becoming independent, starting your career, and finding the balance between work and fun. Going through this experience with a partner has been incredible, but also brings its own set of challenges. My mental and emotional health would not be as positive or uplifting without him. I believe that having a strong and helpful support system is incredibly important in any stage of your life. Since my boyfriend plays such a large role in my life, I believe I can offer a unique perspective on certain topics. Some themes I definitely want to touch on is my struggle with managing finances, having an adult relationship, and how to cope with losing friends. I have grown up so much throughout these past few years, and I want to share that with you. My biggest goal for this project is to not only give readers insight to different decisions or issues, but to also let them know they are not alone. We all have to make those steps towards supporting ourselves, and sometimes not by choice. I hope I can offer advice or at least comfort to those who are struggling to become independent.

Tune in next week to learn more about the importance of having a support system to help guide your journey into the “Real World”.

I am a senior at SFASU, graduating in December 2021 with a bachelors in Animal Science. I want to be a Zookeeper when I get out of school because I have always had a passion for exotic animals. My favorite hobbies include painting and reading!
