Late-night scrolling through Facebook, I came across a post from a young lady whom I attended high school with. She questioned why anyone would ever masturbate, claiming she herself had never and would never. But this got me thinking about how little some women know about our bodies.
I come from a small town in Texas, where the dominant religion is Christianity. Our school system is fairly well rounded, but not the kind to promote self-exploration. My hope by writing this article to clear up the mystery surrounding it. Dispelling the myths that say it’s something to be ashamed of.
What is masturbation?
According to the Cambridge Dictionary: masturbate is a verb that means “to touch or rub your sexual organs in order to give yourself sexual pleasure”. It’s a completely normal human act.
Why do people masturbate?
Well, there are a number of health benefits. Like stress relief, promoting a healthy night’s sleep, improving mood, and acting as pain relief. But other than that, knowing your own body is key to accessing a healthy love life.
I have a theory that if you don’t know how to pleasure yourself how can you expect anyone else to be able to. Learning what you like, tends to happen more with someone you trust. And who do you trust more than yourself? Experiment with the tenderness of touch, figure out, what you like and what you don’t before you introduce a lover. This kind of experimentation can lead to mind-blowing orgasms. And who couldn’t use a few more of those?
I hate that things like masturbation have this unspoken connotation of being something shameful and dirty. I also hate the fact that I feel like a free-spirited hippie writing this. But I do believe that more women should claim their bodies as their own and be in control of their own pleasure.
If there is a moral/ religious argument against masturbation, that’s understandable why someone would not want to go against their own beliefs. And I’m not one to push people to do anything they may not want to do, however, if you are curious with an open mind perhaps this might teach you something you didn’t know or never thought about before.
