Netflix Originals You Need to Watch Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFA chapter.

This list is for those of you who just finished binge-watching a show and you need another obsession to add to your life. These are five of my favorite Netflix Originals that I think everyone should watch. They are guaranteed to pull on your heart strings, make you laugh until your sides hurt and probably cry your eyes out. So, bring out the snacks and tissues.

1. Love

Love is a show that follows the lives of Mickey Blue and Gus Cruikshank, two people who have been unlucky in love until they have a chance encounter in gas station. Mickey is a recovering alcoholic and sex/love addict, while Gus is an awkward pushover. Though radically different, they have a connection and they decided to navigate the world of healthy adult relationships with each other— which proves to be much harder than they imagined. Love is a hilarious show with dark, sarcastic humor, cute mushy moments and it is definitely an emotional roller coaster for the viewers as well as the characters.

2. Everything Sucks

High school is difficult. It is awkward, confusing, and sometimes can be very lonely. This feeling of teenage angst paired with 90s nostalgia is exactly what gives Everything Sucks its special touch. The story follows a group of freshmen in high school who are trying to create an epic movie while learning about themselves, first love and heartbreak. There is truly a character in this show that everyone can identify with.

3. Santa Clarita Diet

Sheila and Joel are realtors and they have a teenage daughter named Abby. To the average person they look like a typical Santa Clarita, California, family. But behind those suburban house walls, Sheila has developed a disease that makes her crave human flesh. And this new life as an undead woman finally gives her the confidence she has always wanted. This show is hilariously vulgar, sarcastic, and the humor is extremely dark. I will warn you though, it is extremely graphic. Netflix did not skip out on the gore in this tv show. Would not recommend eating a meal while watching Santa Clarita Diet.

4. Atypical

Sam is an 18-year-old autistic boy who decides it is time to experience love and gain some independence. For some people on the autistic spectrum, it is difficult to read social cues, speak with emotion, or accept physical touch. Atypical is trying to humanize people on the autistic spectrum by showing they are just as worthy and capable of love as everyone else. Watching this show is a breath of fresh air from the usual romantic comedy, and it is heartwarming to watch Sam experiencing life. I recommend this show to everyone, it is not only funny, but it is amazing to see a show about an autistic person. Being able to see people who look like you on screen is why representation is so important.

5. The End of the F***ing World

What do you get when you cross a burgeoning sociopathic murder with a girl who is always pissed off at the world? You get The End of the F***ing World. The show is about two teenagers, James, plotting his first murder, and Alyssa, the annoying girl he wants to kill. But during their time together, James begins to have actual feelings for Alyssa, aside from blood lust. This dark romantic comedy is strangely endearing, full of twists and turns, and truly a must-watch.
