The 90’s represent a lot of different things to people. For some, it was the time of Ross and Rachel, Supermarket Sweep, or even razor flip phones. Maybe the 90’s were all about Britney’s inclination towards toxic relationships, or making sure your Tamagotchi pet was still alive (unlike your Furby, who you hoped would die as soon as possible).
For me, the 90’s represents one of the best movies ever created. A movie so great that it combines not only an amazing (and completely 90’s-esk) soundtrack with super chic outfits, but also includes an incredibly animated cast. That’s right, folks, I’m talking about Space Jam.
I’m sure you all remember Michael Jordan’s cinematic debut where he retires from basketball only to jump right back in when the Looney Tunes cast recruits him to beat the alien team, Monstars, in an epic basketball game to the death.
Up until yesterday, I had resigned to the fact that rewatching the entertaining film and occasionally googling the Space Jam website (which still exists btw SpaceJamSite) was all I was going to have. Fortunately, I found out that wait for it…. SPACE JAM 2 IS HAPPENING!
After recovering from my initial shock, I began searching for any articles I could find about it. The new film will be directed by Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) and star the NBA player, Lebron James, as well as the entire Looney Tunes Cast. Although no word has come out about the plot of the new movie, I am assuming it will involve another ‘looney’ adventure as well as plenty of slam dunks. There is no release date currently out, but many are expecting it to be close to the year 2020.
When rumors were floating around about the possibility of a Space Jam sequel, many fans were upset and worried that they would not do the pop culture favorite justice. Hopefully since the producer, Ryan Coogler, did such a fantastic job on the award winning Black Panther, he will make sure this sequel lives up to its predecessor as well as make sure there is much needed representation throughout the film. My one hope is that Bill Murray returns once again to complete the film by adding his natural humor and likable personality.
Be on the lookout for the nostalgic hit and, That’s All Folks!
