22 Lessons I’ve Learnt in 22 Years (As told by Greys Anatomy)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Last week I turned 22. A couple days later I got my wisdom teeth removed. Needless to say, I had a couple days to reflect on my life, while watching a lot (like a lot) of Greys Anatomy. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Greys Anatomy for existing, and while I have watched the series before, it constantly serves as a source of comfort for me.

So then, what happens when you’re practically bedridden for four days, watch six seasons of Greys Anatomy in said time, are heavily medicated, and just celebrated a relatively insignificant birthday? Well, for me, it occasioned in my sedated thoughts becoming all dark and twisty, while threatening to escape the confides of my own mind. Each episode, at least one character would learn a lesson. It was all good and well, and awfully inspiring. They learned the importance of love, loyalty, and commitment; they overcame a fear, or accomplished something extraordinary. It got me thinking about my life, and how it seemingly failed in comparison. And that’s okay, life isn’t a TV show, where Dr. McDreamy sweeps you off your feet (although, I am more of a McSteamy girl myself) while the perfect romantic score plays quietly in the background.

I quickly began to reflect on the major lessons I have learned in my life, big and small. And because I just turned 22, and have been watching an awful lot of Greys Anatomy lately, I find it only fitting that I tell you 22 lessons that I’ve learned in 22 years, as told by Greys Anatomy characters.

1. Let the little things go

2. Be compassionate and kind

3. Do good for others

4. Fight for the ones you love

5. Get a good nights rest

6. Know when to say ‘no’

7. But still, know when so say ‘yes’

8. Family should always come first

9. It’s okay to fight

10. Forgive generously and forgive quick

11. Exercise

12. Make time for yourself

13. Make time for others

14. Dental floss

15. Surround yourself with people who inspire you

16. Challenge yourself

17. Be humble

18. Accept fault

19. Take advantage of your full potential

20. Travel when you can

For everyone who watches Greys Anatomy, you probably know that traveling never ends well for any of the characters. So, instead, I’ll leave you with this.

You’re welcome.

21. Make goals

22. And do not, under any circumstances, rub your eyes when you have mascara on

If there’s anything my 22 years of life have taught me, it’s to be humble and kind. Be a person of character, and live an extraordinary life. And to be extraordinary is subjective, so be the best version of yourself and aspire every day to reach your full potential. If all else fails, just be Meredith Grey.
