Fast Food for New Year’s Fitness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Stay fit on the go, even when you forget your lunch!

Keeping one’s figure or making it better has been a popular New Year’s resolution for ages. Not much has changed for 2017. Here, I’ve taken the ‘guessing’ work out of choosing foods you can order without sabotaging your bikini bod in the works! This guide is great for when you forget to pack your lunch, or when you’re too bombarded with assignments to make one.

Starbucks

Going without caffeine is not an option. Not only will coffee give you the energy boost to keep you going on those long days clocking hours at the library, it can also increase your metabolic rate, aiding in weight loss. While most Starbucks now list the calories directly on the menu, I have hand selected some of the healthiest options.

Skim Cafe Latte is only 100 calories with 0g of fat. If you can, give up the creamy milk infused drinks for the rich, black coffee, which sits at a mere 5 calories. For a sweet snack get a Petite Vanilla bean scone with 130 calories, 5 grams of fat and 19g of carbohydrates.

A little more hungry?

Get the Protein Bistro Box that is at 360 calories, 18g of fat, and 37g of carbs with 13 grams of protein, great to maintaining lean muscle mass.

Subway

Follow these cardinal rules and you’ll still be on course for that beach bod at Wreck Beach and ensuring your workouts don’t go to waste from eating empty calories. Choose one of the classics, ham, roast beef, egg salad, turkey, veggie, or even sweet onion chicken teriyaki and the following:

  • Six inch
  • 9 grain whole wheat
  • Skip the cheese
  • Half or no sauce

Tim Hortons

You managed to drag your butt out of bed for that inhumane 8-am class. But you didn’t manage to get breakfast. While Tim Hortons might not be the best choice, with its typical long lines and buffet of grease since it became American owned, it does have some safe options if you’re in a bind.

  • English muffin with egg white, 220 calories 5g of fat and 29 carbs
  • Maple oatmeal 220 calories, 2.5g of fat, and 49 carbs
  • Latte 80 calories

Try to avoid the temptation of adding a donut to the meal and you’re all set!
