Meet Megan Smith! A smart, funny, quirky redhead who is also one of the most kind-hearted individuals I have ever known. I have known Megan since we were naive little kids running around clueless on soccer fields. I have since ceased any and all movement, while Megan still wields her power and finesse in both soccer and softball. She is both competitive and aggressive but never compromises her integrity. Megan is the epitome of “Keeping Calm.”Â

Year/Major: 4th year Education Student
Relationship Status: in a relationship
Â
Describe yourself in 3 words:
“Sleepy, clumsy, introverted.”
Â
Favorite movie:
“Clueless.”
Â
Favorite TV show:
“Full House—can’t wait for Fuller House to come out on Netflix!”
Â
Favorite Book:
“I feel like I don’t have time to read for fun anymore with school! So, I guess, Harry Potter.”
Â
Favorite thing about SFU:
“I really like being up on the mountain for classes! I think it’s beautiful up there. I mean, I could do without sitting on the packed 145 buses everyday, but it’s okay. I guess it’s kind of hard to pick what my favourite thing about SFU is, but I’ve had a great experience in my time here.”
Â
How did you choose your major/minor?
“Well, teaching has always been something that I wanted to do. I’ve tutored and I coach softball, so I’ve always liked being around kids. I chose my minor (Learning Disabilities) because the prevalence of disabilities is increasing in schools and a lot of the children don’t have access to the resources or the support that they deserve.”
Â
Quick! In five years you are…
“Hopefully employed in the field that I’m studying and moved out of my parents’ house, finally! I hope by that time I’ve travelled a little bit and have seen more of the world.”
Â
How/where did you meet your boyfriend and what drew you to him?
“We met at one of my previous jobs. I was drawn to him because he was really nice and always laughed at my stupid jokes.”
Â
The most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?
“There was one night in the summer when I was having a bad day and I had a long shift at work. When I got off and walked to my car, there were a dozen roses and a box of chocolates and a card on the hood from my boyfriend. It was so sweet!”
Â
Â
Is it difficult being in a relationship, while balancing school and work?
“Honestly, it gets a little tricky at times. We can only hang out once a week, usually, during the semester because we’re both so busy with school, but we try to make the best of it.”
Â
Are there certain benefits to being in a relationship while in school?
“Oh yeah! I know a lot of girls who say that they don’t think that they could handle dating while also being in school, but it helps that my boyfriend is also in school. We’re both really supportive towards each other when we have exams or assignments due and try to help each other out. I know that sometimes in relationships there can be tension because one party thinks that they are being ignored when their s/o is swamped with schoolwork, so it really helps that we are both in the same boat. Also, we kind of have a little bit of a healthy competition to see who can get higher grades. It’s motivating!”

Advice for those of us still searching for “the one”:
“I think the most important thing about searching for “the one” is to throw away all your previous hopes and expectations about what your “ideal” partner should be like. Try to date people who are outside of what you think your type is! It’s really important to keep an open mind because you never know who’ll walk into your life and make you feel like you’ve never felt before. Also, another important thing is to not waste your time on someone who you don’t see a future with and who doesn’t treat you the way you deserve. So many times I’ll hear people complaining about their s/o and I think to myself, why are you wasting your time? It’s not worth the stress. Your boyfriend/girlfriend should be someone who lifts you up and is a great addition to your life—not someone who makes you sad or annoyed. This seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people stay with someone just for the sake of being in a relationship.”
Â
Lastly, your all-time favorite couple (fiction or real-life) and why?
“Jim and Pam from the Office. They’re my favourite because they’re simple and not over-the-top dramatic. I also like how their relationship was built on a strong foundation of friendship first. Also, they’re cute as —!
Â
Megan is also pretty cute. This girl has a heart of gold and deserves every success and happiness in the world. Personally, my favorite thing about Megan is her ridiculously warm bear hugs. If you see her around campus—she will undoubtedly be the one in pink—just run up and give her a squeeze.  You have my permission!
