It’s hard being a university student in BC when you’re not 19. This is my second year being underage here and as Halloween fast approaches, I find it hard to not be a little upset at missing out on all the club and pub events my friends are going to. So here are a few ways to get into the spooky spirit without needing to be a certain age.
If you want to go out…
Fright Nights is the place to be if you want to be scared. Located at Playland, this experience offers eight haunted houses as well as 20 rides to enjoy. The haunted houses have a wide array of themes including an asylum, haunted mansion, and infamous characters from your favorite horror movies. This event runs on select nights from October 5-31 with the pricing varying from date to date. With such a selection there’s no way you won’t be afraid!
Potter’s House of Horrors is an event held in Surrey that offers two haunted houses, an escape room, and an area for kids. The haunted houses are called Monstrosity 2.0 and Devils Descent and cover an area of 15,000 square feet. Both houses feature actors along with animatronics that are sure to scare you. The escape room is new for 2018 and it allows guests 20 minutes to figure out puzzles and find clues in order to try and escape. Tickets for everything are on sale now until October 31.

If scary isn’t your thing, then Harvest Glow is for you! Running in Langley until November 3, this adorable event offers an indoor pumpkin patch, mini putt putt, an array of food and drinks, a corn maze, and their harvest market which features all sorts of goods from 20+ local vendors. If you’re looking for the perfect Instagram photo, this is it!
If you want to stay in…
Who can blame you for wanting to relax on Halloween? There’s nothing I love more than cuddling up with a blanket and watching Netflix. Here are some of my favorite festive movies and TV shows that are available on Netflix:
-
Scream Queens – Starring Emma Roberts as the leader of her sorority, her and her sisters find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery.
-
Little Evil – Adam Scott shines in this spooky Netflix film. His character just wants to bond with his new stepson, however there’s something not quite right with this little dude.
-
Coraline – This animation is perfectly creepy for Halloween! Coraline discovers a portal to another world in her new house, however this new world isn’t as perfect as it may seem.

A movie marathon is never complete unless you have some snacks! Popcorn is a natural go to, but maybe you’re in the mood for something a little more festive. You could try making some sweet treats like these Frankenstein Pretzels, Caramel Apple Nachos, or Pumpkin Spice Pretzels. Or if you’re in the mood for something a little more savory you could try these Ghost Pizza Bagels, Jack ‘O Lantern Quesadillas, or Halloweeño Jalapeño Popper Mummies. Also if you’re not in the mood to bake, you can also find cookie decorating kits at Walmart. Although if you pick up one of those kits, I’d recommend buying another container of frosting so you can properly frost all of the cookies!
If you still want to party…
Get creative! Sure you aren’t old enough to hit the clubs and you’re too old to go trick or treating, but trust me good old fashioned Halloween parties can still be fun! If you have some friends who also aren’t old enough to go out you all can get together and make your own party. You can dress up in costumes, maybe do some pumpkin carving, and you can make some of those recipes listed above! You could also watch some festive movies or put on some Halloween music. Basically, your imagination is the limit!
